The Community
Marten Falls First Nation is located at the intersection of the Ogoki and Albany Rivers, approximately 400 km northeast of Thunder Bay. The community is accessible by air and winter road, with the closest year-round road access located in Nakina, approximately 200 km south. The land, rivers, forests, fish, and wildlife are central to the identity, well-being, and future development of Marten Falls First Nation.
Reports To
The Chief Executive Officer of Marten Falls Economic Development Corporation reports to the President and Board of the Marten Falls Economic Development Corporation.
Job Overview
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for providing visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for the Marten Falls Economic Development Corporation. The CEO will guide the corporation’s economic development priorities, support sustainable enterprise growth, oversee joint venture and partnership opportunities, and ensure that all activities align with the values, priorities, and long-term interests of Marten Falls First Nation.
This senior leadership role includes strategic planning, governance support, financial oversight, organizational development, business attraction and retention, community engagement, funding and grant management, and relationship-building with government, industry, community members, Chief and Council, Elders, and partners.
Responsibilities and Duties
The duties include but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement a long-term strategic vision for the Marten Falls Economic Development Corporation.
- Work closely with the President and Board to support strong governance, accountability, and ethical decision-making.
- Establish clear operational priorities, policies, procedures, and reporting structures.
- Ensure the corporation’s work reflects the values, priorities, and economic interests of Marten Falls First Nation.
- Provide regular updates, reports, and recommendations to the President and Board.
- Identify, assess, and pursue economic development opportunities that benefit Marten Falls First Nation.
- Lead business attraction, business retention, and enterprise development initiatives.
- Support the growth of current and future business ventures, partnerships, and investments.
- Conduct market research and analysis to identify emerging opportunities and risks.
- Promote responsible, sustainable, and community-focused economic development.
- Oversee and support joint venture agreements, business partnerships, and industry relationships.
- Negotiate and maintain positive relationships with businesses, government agencies, funding bodies, consultants, and external partners.
- Ensure agreements and partnerships are structured to protect and advance the interests of Marten Falls First Nation.
- Represent the corporation professionally at meetings, events, negotiations, and public engagements.
- Oversee financial planning, budgets, revenue generation, and long-term sustainability of the corporation.
- Monitor financial performance and ensure responsible management of resources.
- Work with finance staff, auditors, consultants, and the Board to support transparent reporting.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, policies, agreements, and funding requirements.
- Support strong internal systems for record keeping, reporting, human resources, and operational accountability.
- Build strong relationships with Chief and Council, Elders, community members, staff, and partners.
- Support community engagement activities related to economic development initiatives.
- Communicate economic development opportunities and progress in a clear and respectful manner.
- Ensure community voices and First Nation values are considered in planning and decision-making.
- Provide leadership and guidance to management teams, staff, consultants, and contractors.
- Develop an effective organizational structure with clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability.
- Support succession planning, staff development, and capacity building.
- Promote a respectful, ethical, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the President and Board.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Public Administration, Indigenous Governance, or a related field is preferred.
- A master’s degree or additional leadership training is considered an asset.
- Certified Economic Developer designation or similar certification is considered an asset.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive senior leadership experience, preferably in economic development, business development, corporate leadership, First Nation administration, or a related field.
- Experience working with First Nation governments, organizations, Chief and Council, Boards, community members, industry, and government agencies.
- Strong understanding of economic development, business planning, governance, financial management, and funding mechanisms.
- Proven experience with strategic planning, project management, negotiations, partnership development, and organizational leadership.
- Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal economic development programs and resources.
- Experience preparing reports, proposals, funding applications, business cases, and briefing materials.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related business, project management, and reporting tools.
- A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
- Proficiency in Anishinaabemowin is considered an asset.

- Commitment to ethical leadership, accountability, and the long-term success of Marten Falls First Nation.
Working Conditions
- Primary work location is the Thunder Bay Sub Office at 577 11th Avenue, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
- This is a three-year contract position, subject to a three-month probationary period.
- Occasional travel to Marten Falls First Nation and other locations will be required.
- Evening and weekend meetings or events may be required.
- The position requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to work in a fast-paced leadership environment.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $200,000–$250,000 annually.
- Salary will be based on experience and education.
- Paid time off and designated paid days may be available according to organizational policy.
