Depot Manager jobs

The Logistics Manager provides hands-on leadership for the safe and efficient coordination of staff, equipment, transportation, and materials across logistics and heavy haul jobs. This role works directly with employees in the yard and field, assigns daily work, coordinates job requirements, monitors execution, and steps in operationally when required. Safety is the number one priority in every decision, from job planning and staffing through load securement, transportation, site activities, and completion of the work.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead by example and make safety the number one priority in the planning and execution of every logistics and heavy haul job.
• Provide hands-on daily management of logistics, driving, heavy haul, and material handling staff in the yard and at job sites.
• Coordinate employees, trucks, trailers, equipment, materials, permits, and job-site requirements to ensure work is properly planned and safely executed.
• Assign work, communicate job expectations, confirm responsibilities, and make sure employees have the information, tools, equipment, and support required to complete each job safely.
• Conduct or coordinate pre-job meetings, hazard assessments, safe work planning, and field-level safety checks before work begins.
• Monitor work in progress, address changing job conditions, and stop or correct work where a safety concern, resource issue, or operational risk is identified.
• Coordinate schedules and priorities with shipping, receiving, project teams, supervisors, customers, and site personnel.
• Oversee the loading, unloading, protection, securement, transportation, rigging, and movement of structural steel, oversized loads, equipment, and materials.
• Operate Class 1 vehicles, forklifts, telehandlers, and other material handling equipment when operational support is required.
• Ensure pre-trip, en-route, post-trip, rigging, lifting-device, trailer, and equipment inspections are completed and deficiencies are addressed.
• Coach employees on safe work practices, job procedures, equipment use, communication, teamwork, and accountability.
• Manage day-to-day staffing needs, attendance issues, job coverage, and reassignment of resources to meet operational requirements.
• Ensure transportation records, driver logs, inspection documents, delivery paperwork, and other required job documentation are complete and accurate.
• Support incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions, and follow-up in coordination with Health and Safety and operational leadership.
• Maintain vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment in safe, clean, and serviceable condition and coordinate maintenance or repairs as required.
• Identify opportunities to improve logistics planning, crew coordination, equipment utilization, safety, and job execution.
• Perform other logistics, transportation, and heavy haul duties as required.

This is a working manager role, not a desk-based coordination position. The Logistics Manager remains closely involved with employees and job execution while taking clear ownership of safety, staffing, communication, scheduling, and operational follow-through.

The role is expected to:

• Be present with the team in the yard and on job sites.
• Coordinate people, equipment, materials, and job requirements from planning through completion.
• Lead pre-job planning and reinforce safe work expectations throughout the job.
• Provide clear direction, monitor performance, and address issues promptly.
• Step into driving, equipment operation, rigging, or field support when required.
• Keep management and project stakeholders informed of job status, risks, and resource needs.

Requirements

• Valid Class 1 Driver’s Licence and Air Brake Endorsement.
• Minimum five years of Class 1 driving experience, preferably involving oversized or specialized loads.
• Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating employees in logistics, transportation, construction, steel fabrication, heavy haul, or a related industrial environment.
• Hands-on experience with rigging, load securement, forklifts, material handling equipment, and field operations.
• Strong working knowledge of transportation requirements, load securement standards, hazard assessment, and safe heavy haul practices.
• Proven ability to plan jobs, coordinate multiple employees and resources, adjust priorities, and resolve operational issues in real time.
• Ability to provide clear direction, hold employees accountable, and coach staff respectfully and consistently.
• Clean driver’s abstract.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to identify equipment concerns.
• Strong communication, organization, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently, remain visible and engaged with the crew, and support work directly when required.
• Willingness to work outdoors, travel to job sites, and work overtime or weekends based on operational needs.
