Full job description

About the Role

Established in 2013, Ascension Automation Solutions are experts in industrial robotics and manufacturing applications. We are currently developing a proprietary platform for computer vision, designed for the rapid training and deployment of AI vision models.

We are seeking an analytical, self-motivated engineer to help bridge the gap between industrial machine vision systems, high-level software development for AI and the practical realities of the factory floor.

The Computer Vision Engineer will work on the software engineering side to support the development and implementation of our AI vision platform. This role requires a professional who can work independently to solve complex technical hurdles while remaining a collaborative team player during large-scale system integrations. You will be responsible for maintaining and expanding the Python-based backend, configuring varied imaging hardware, and ensuring reliable communication between our AI platform and industrial controllers (PLCs).

Priority Selection: We understand that this is a multifaceted position and candidates may have all skills outlined. We expect the right candidate to grow with the team and encourage all candidates with relevant experience to apply.

Preference will be given to candidates with industrial automation and traditional machine vision experience.

Key Responsibilities

System Integration & AI Implementation

  • Develop and maintain backend services using FastAPI, managing asynchronous tasks and data validation.
  • Assist in training and deploying YOLO/Ultralytics models within our industrial software ecosystem.
  • Docker experience is an asset.

Industrial Networking & Optical Systems

  • Develop and debug Python-based EtherNet/IP (EIP) and CIP communications for real-time PLC handshaking.
  • Configure and calibrate a wide range of hardware, including 1D/2D/3D sensors, laser profilers, and GenICam devices.

Data Handling & Field Commissioning

  • Use NumPy, OpenCV, Open3D to process high-volume camera data and 3D point clouds.
  • Perform on-site setup and troubleshooting of vision solutions at customer facilities.

Documentation

  • Create clear technical documentation for system architecture and end-user operation.

Qualifications

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Software, Electrical, Mechatronics) or a related field.
  • Experience: 2–4 years of relevant experience in a vision or automation role.
  • Python Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced experience with multi-process architectures and asynchronous programming.
  • Docker: Proficient in containerizing and managing multi-service architectures using Docker.
  • Vision & ML: Practical experience with PyTorch and OpenCV. Familiarity with object detection (YOLO) is a must.
  • Automation: Experience interfacing with PLCs and reading/writing custom byte buffers over TCP/UDP or EtherNet/IP.
  • Data Science Tools: Comfortable using NumPy for efficient data manipulation.
  • Linux: Familiarity with Linux OS an asset.
  • Mobility: Must possess a valid driver’s license and have regular access to a reliable vehicle for travel to the main office and regional project sites.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel (up to 25%) across Canada and the USA for commissioning.

Preferred Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to diagnose complex hardware/software dropouts and optimize inference pipelines.
  • Collaboration: Able to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Independence: Proven ability to take ownership of a project module and drive it to completion with minimal supervision.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Rate: $38.00 – $50.00 CAD/hr (based on experience).
  • Additional Pay: Overtime, site bonuses, and double-time rates.
  • Benefits: Dental, Vision, Extended Health, and Long-term Disability.

This is to fill an existing vacancy.
