The successful candidate must be safety-conscious, comfortable working directly with customers, and able to perform accurately in a fast-paced scrap-metal environment. Previous experience in a scrap yard, landfill, recycling facility, or material-processing operation is strongly preferred.

  • Afternoon shift: 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday shift: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Saturday availability is required. Shift assignments may change based on operational requirements.

  • Greet customers and provide friendly, professional, and efficient service
  • Inspect incoming loads and assist customers with unloading materials
  • Identify, sort, and grade different types of non-ferrous scrap
  • Check materials for contamination, prohibited items, hazardous materials, and incorrectly graded material
  • Communicate material-grading decisions clearly and professionally
  • Report questionable materials, grading discrepancies, or customer concerns to the supervisor
  • Keep customer unloading areas safe, clean, and organized

Material Sorting and Processing

  • Sort and separate copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, insulated wire, electric motors, and other non-ferrous materials
  • Distinguish between different grades, compositions, contamination levels, and recovery values
  • Prevent cross-contamination and mixing between material grades
  • Process materials using hand tools, power tools, cut-off saws, wire-stripping equipment, and other shop equipment
  • Dismantle, strip, clean, size, and prepare materials according to company specifications
  • Prepare finished materials for storage, baling, packaging, and shipment
  • Assist with inventory organization and maintain clearly separated material storage areas

Shipping and Equipment Operation

  • Prepare material orders and finished products for outgoing shipments
  • Load and unload trucks, trailers, bins, and containers
  • Safely operate forklifts and skid steers to move, stack, load, and organize materials
  • Inspect equipment before use and report damage, leaks, defects, or unsafe conditions
  • Assist with loading outbound shipments accurately and efficiently
  • Follow supervisor instructions and shipping requirements to ensure the correct material and grade are loaded
  • Secure, stage, and organize materials for safe transportation

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Follow all company safety policies, traffic rules, and equipment procedures
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and yard
  • Perform routine housekeeping, including sweeping, cleaning processing areas, and removing debris
  • Immediately report hazards, unsafe behaviour, equipment problems, spills, or damaged materials
  • Work safely around customers, trucks, mobile equipment, processing machinery, and other employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or department manager

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience safely operating forklifts and skid steers

  • Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to communicate professionally with customers, drivers, supervisors, and coworkers
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong safety awareness and good judgment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying Edmonton weather conditions
  • Basic reading, writing, math, and computer skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a scrap yard, metal-recycling facility, landfill, or industrial material-processing operation
  • Knowledge of non-ferrous metals and common scrap grades
  • Experience receiving and grading customer materials
  • Experience processing, stripping, dismantling, or sorting scrap metal
  • Experience loading and unloading trucks, trailers, bins, and shipping containers
  • Experience operating an excavator with a shear attachment, material handler, loader, or other heavy equipment will be considered as a strong asset
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience performing basic equipment inspections
  • High school diploma or equivalent
