Case Manager, Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Office
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for all members of the University community, including students, faculty and administrators. The Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Office (DEHR) contributes to this commitment by collaborating with campus partners to advance goals on campus that promote diverse and accessible learning and working environments. The DEHR provides support and intervention to all members of the University community who believe they have experienced any form of discrimination or discriminatory harassment, as well as sexualized violence and misconduct.
Duties:
The Case Manager, Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Office, reports directly to the Director, and will identify resolution pathways to promote, protect and uphold fairness in response to human rights concerns and complaints. The Case Manager plays a key role in fostering an accessible space in which members of the University community can bring concerns forward. Working closely with the Director, the Case Manager will help ensure the University meets its legal obligations under human rights legislation and policy obligations related to human rights, harassment and sexualized violence and misconduct. This role contributes to VIU's strategic plan by supporting the University's core commitments to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Key Responsibilities:
Case Management - responsible for wrap-around support and intervention:
- The Case Manager is expected to work independently to receive concerns and complaints brought to the DEHR Office, in line with relevant VIU policies.
- Exercises sound judgement and discretion to initially assess and triage cases.
- Adopts a trauma-informed lens and upholds procedural fairness and transparency whilst determining, in consultation with the Director, appropriate resolution pathways in response to complaints and concerns, including informal and formal processes.
- Maintains highly confidential and accurate case records.
- Promotes restorative practices to resolve concerns and complaints; confidently applying conflict management skills to encourage positive outcomes.
- Tracks and monitors data to identify gaps and successes to inform proactive engagement; providing insight to the Director.
- Provides a supportive space for members of the University community who have experienced sexualized violence and misconduct; responds to disclosures and reports in timely a trauma-informed manner, pursuant to VIU's Sexualized Violence and Misconduct Policy and Procedure.
Campus Partnerships and Education - advances equity, diversity and inclusion across campus:
- Partners with the Director and members of the University community to identify opportunities for educating and enhancing VIU's capacity in relation to human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, sexualized violence and misconduct, and accessibility.
- Creates and delivers workshops and educational sessions within the campus community.
- Conducts follow-up of training and workshops to measure results to promote long-term systemic change.
- Provides consultation to campus partners on best-practice and human rights responsibilities.
- Acts as a representative of the Office to contribute to relevant committees.
- Connects with the student body and new employees to raise awareness of the support offered by the DEHR Office.
Resource Development - supports communications and outreach:
- Collaborate with the Director to develop and create resources aimed to raise awareness of the goals and responsibilities of the Office
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor degree in a human rights or equity related discipline, humanities, social science or related field, from an appropriately accredited institution. Minimum three-years recent case management experience. An equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience may be considered.
- Must possess comprehensive understanding and experience recognizing and responding to complaints related to human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion and sexual misconduct.
- Experience assessing complex human rights issues or complaints based on BC Human Rights Code protected grounds, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify appropriate resolution pathways.
- Strong ability to manage highly sensitive issues with sound judgement, discretion and care, and maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage a high caseload and competing deadlines, as well as managing changing priorities and working calmly in highly charged environments.
- Experience successfully resolving issues and complaints, using informal conflict resolution approaches and restorative practice.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people with marginalized identities and experiences, with a strong understanding of the barriers faced by equity-deserving communities.
- Dedicated to supporting the advancement of equity and diversity efforts to promote accessible and inclusive learning and working environments.
- Must thrive in fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
- Ability to understand and interpret policies and procedures, familiarity with relevant legislation, and trends and best practices related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights.
- Excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritizing, and execution skills.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member with the Director, work collaboratively with other departments; establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with individuals across the organization who are instrumental in ensuring that equity is integrated into all facets of the University.
- Training and experience in trauma-informed practice.
- Strong written and analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Adept in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications:

In our journey towards greater diversity, we invite applications from members of equity-seeking communities including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of all gender identities and sexual orientations who bring value to the VIU community through their lived experiences. We encourage members of all equity-seeking groups to self-identify within their application cover letter.
