METER TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE
Oshawa Power Group of Companies is a parent company of fiber optic, district energy and renewable generation businesses, and the local electricity distribution company that supplies electricity to more than 63,000 customers in the city of Oshawa. Located just 45 minutes east of Toronto off the shores of Lake Ontario, Oshawa serves as the economic engine for the Durham Region. Oshawa Power maintains 1000 km of overhead and underground distribution lines within a 150 km2 service territory, operated at 44 and 13.8 kV, supplied by 9 distribution and 3 transmission substations. ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
This position reports to the Manager, Distribution Construction. This position will be responsible to assist in the safe inspection, installation, maintenance, programming, repair and testing of all types of revenue metering equipment and related systems used in Oshawa Power's electrical distribution system.
Working under the direction of journeyperson Meter Technicians and in accordance with Measurement Canada, Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), Ontario Energy Board (OEB), and company standards, the Apprentice develops the skills required to become a journeyperson Meter Technician.
Hourly Rate: $36.52- $53.72 per our Collective Agreement with IBEW 636

AS THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT, YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE INVOLVED WITH:
- Assist to install, repair, prepare, evaluate, configure, upgrade and replace electrical meters and associated communications and instruments in accordance with Measurement Canada regulations and the company's policies, procedures, and standards.
- Install, test, operate, upgrade and maintain all smart meter communications systems and associated hardware
- Install, test, operate and maintain interval metering communication systems, including, but not limited to, TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, Cellular & RF based systems.
- Assist with programming and commissioning advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) devices.
- Support and perform cross phase testing and analysis on site and/or remotely.
- Install and operate recording and testing instruments to monitor system disturbances.
- Generate, modify, update, maintain and preserve all meter documentation, as required by Measurement Canada.
- Collaborate with customers, contractors and other departments on metering standards, practices and installations.
- Support analyzing, testing and calibration of meters and associated instruments on customer premises to verify measurement and billing.
- Conduct meter accuracy tests under supervision.
- Maintain concise and accurate digital and paper test and calibration records as required.
- Perform regular stand-by duty and emergency call-outs with the ability to reach the Company's premises within twenty minutes - when deemed competent to do so.
- Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the IHSA rule book and the company's safe work practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER:
Education:
- Post-Secondary Education from an Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technician Program or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Completion of courses in mathematics, physics, electronics, electrical technology, or related disciplines is considered an asset.
Experience:
- Previous electrical, utility, construction, or technical field experience is considered an asset.
- Experience working with electrical equipment and tools is considered an asset.
Required Competencies
- Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals and power distribution systems.
- Knowledge of electrical safety practices.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to learn metering technologies, communications equipment, and testing procedures.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and mobile work management systems.
- Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical distribution system construction, inspection, maintenance, operation, and testing.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings, and procedure manuals.
- Must attend and re-certify as required all relevant operational and safety courses.
- Team player with a positive can-do attitude with high initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and across various organizational teams.
- Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills with the ability to maintain professional and effective working relationships.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills.
- Possess a valid Ontario Class G license with a clean abstract.
- Strong commitment to safety, customer service, teamwork, respect in the workplace and continued improvement of processes and procedures.
- Ability to progress through the Meter Technician apprenticeship and certification requirements.
