Position Summary

The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the Company's financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and strong internal controls. This role is responsible for assisting with month-end and year-end reporting, supervising accounting activities, maintaining financial records, supporting audits, and ensuring compliance with Canadian accounting standards, excise tax requirements, and cannabis industry regulations.

The Assistant Controller works closely with Operations, Procurement, Sales, Quality Assurance, Human Resources, and Executive Management to provide timely financial information that supports sound business decisions and operational efficiency.

Financial Reporting & Accounting

· Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

· Ensure accurate and timely completion of month-end and year-end close processes.

· Review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and general ledger activity.

· Analyze financial results and investigate significant variances.

· Assist in preparing financial reports and management dashboards.

· Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.

· Maintain compliance with applicable accounting standards.

General Accounting

· Review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions for accuracy.

· Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.

· Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, inventory, intercompany accounts, and balance sheet accounts.

· Ensure proper allocation of production costs and inventory valuation.

· Assist in maintaining accurate inventory costing and standard cost updates.

Inventory & Cost Accounting

· Support inventory reconciliations between ERP systems and physical inventory.

· Monitor inventory adjustments and investigate discrepancies.

· Assist with production costing and cost of goods sold calculations.

· Review manufacturing variances and identify opportunities for cost improvements.

· Work with Operations to ensure accurate inventory transactions.

Cannabis Regulatory Compliance

· Assist with cannabis excise duty calculations, reporting, and reconciliations.

· Ensure compliance with CRA excise reporting requirements.

· Support financial reporting related to cannabis inventory movements.

· Assist with financial documentation required for Health Canada inspections and regulatory reporting.

· Maintain records supporting compliance with internal controls and Good Production Practices (GPP).

Internal Controls

· Help develop, implement, and monitor internal financial controls.

· Review accounting processes to improve efficiency and reduce risk.

· Ensure segregation of duties and approval processes are maintained.

· Assist with policy development and financial procedure documentation.

Audit Support

· Prepare audit working papers and supporting documentation.

· Coordinate information requests from external auditors.

· Assist with annual financial statement audits and tax engagements.

· Support internal audits and compliance reviews.

Cash Management

· Monitor cash flow and daily banking activities.

· Assist with cash forecasting.

· Review electronic payments and banking transactions.

· Support treasury and financing activities as required.

Tax Compliance

· Assist with GST/HST filings.

· Support corporate income tax preparation.

· Assist with provincial tax reporting requirements.

· Ensure timely remittance of payroll source deductions and other statutory obligations.

Leadership & Team Support

· Provide guidance and support to accounting staff.

· Assist with employee training and onboarding.

· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

· Promote accountability, collaboration, and professional development within the Finance team.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.

· CPA designation (completed or in progress) preferred.

· 3–7 years of progressive accounting experience.

· Manufacturing or cannabis industry experience considered an asset.

· Experience with inventory accounting and cost accounting preferred.

· Experience supporting external audits.

Knowledge & Skills

· Strong understanding of Canadian accounting principles.

· Knowledge of manufacturing accounting and inventory valuation.

· Experience with ERP systems and accounting software.

· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
