ASSISTANT/JUNIOR PASTRY CHEF | JANEVCA RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
Location: Esquimalt, BC
Salary: $23-24 per hour
Janevca Restaurant & Lounge is seeking a passionate and motivated Junior Pastry Chef to join our culinary team in Esquimalt, BC. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic baker who is eager to develop their skills in a fast-paced hospitality environment while working alongside experienced pastry professionals.
Reporting to the Executive Pastry Chef and Pastry Sous Chef, the Junior Pastry Chef will assist in the preparation and production of high-quality baked goods and desserts for the restaurant and lounge operations. Products may include traditional and artisan breads, laminated doughs, pastries, cakes, plated desserts, ice creams, and other pastry items as required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, attention to detail, creativity, and a willingness to learn while maintaining the highest culinary and sanitation standards.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist in the preparation and production of pastries, breads, desserts, and baked goods according to recipes and presentation standards.
· Support senior pastry staff with daily prep, production, cleaning, and organization tasks.
· Maintain consistency and quality across all pastry products.
· Follow recipes, procedures, and kitchen standards accurately.
· Assist with inventory organization and ingredient preparation as required.
· Ensure all food is prepared and delivered in a timely manner.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation throughout each shift.
· Follow all health, safety, and food handling regulations.
· Wash dishes and kitchen equipment as required during service.
· Participate in team meetings and communicate effectively with kitchen staff and management.
· Support other kitchen or operational areas when needed through cross-training and teamwork.
· Contribute ideas and feedback for product development and kitchen improvements.
Qualifications & Experience
· Completion of, or enrollment in, an accredited Baking & Pastry Arts or Culinary Arts program is considered an asset.
· Minimum 1 year of experience in a commercial bakery, pastry kitchen, or restaurant environment preferred.
· Valid BC FoodSafe Level 1 certification required.

· Ability to retain recipes, techniques, and procedures effectively.
· Excellent time management and ability to work efficiently under pressure.

· Ability to adapt and assist in different areas of the business as required.
· Professional, reliable, and self-motivated.
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
· Ability to stand for extended periods of up to 8 hours.
· Ability to bend, twist, and lift up to 50 lbs.
· Availability to work early morning shifts starting as early as 7:00 AM.
· Must be available to work weekends and statutory holidays as required.
