Job Summary
This position is responsible for partnering with teaching staff to foster student literacy through the management of the library. The role involves providing specialized instruction to both faculty and students, overseeing the selection, organization, utilization, and maintenance of library resources to enhance the academic experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties, though not exhaustive, are part of the job's responsibilities:
- Collaborate with teachers to integrate information and technology literacy instruction, assisting students and staff in identifying appropriate resources to achieve educational goals.
- Provide training to staff on the use of print and electronic reference tools and information literacy processes.
- Reinforce strategy-based reading instruction to aid students in extracting meaning from texts, supporting their engagement with various genres as outlined in the state reading and writing curriculum.
- Promote reading for information and pleasure among students and staff, cultivating a library culture that fosters an appreciation for literature and supports reading incentive programs.
- Develop and maintain a diverse library collection of print, non-print, and electronic resources that support curricular needs, literacy development, and student interests.
- Provide training and guidance to library support staff, ensuring the smooth implementation of the library program. Oversee the management of equipment, materials, and facilities while handling the annual budget, and adhering to state procedures for circulation, cataloging, and processing.
- Serve as a curriculum leader within school teams, contributing to special projects as assigned.
- Participate in professional development activities, including in-service courses and meetings, to continue growing in the role.
- Function as a member of the school’s library team, performing additional duties consistent with the position's scope.
- Coordinate and support library support staff in the fulfillment of their duties.
- Interact daily with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff to facilitate communication and support.
- Manage physical tasks such as moving, lifting, and storing materials and equipment as needed.
- Collaborate with other staff members to design and implement effective instruction and classroom management strategies.
- Utilize automated library systems for collection maintenance, purchasing, cataloging, and inventory management.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff to support a collaborative school environment.
- Maintain accurate records and reports as required.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents to ensure a cohesive working environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Library Science preferred.
- Experience in school library work is desirable but not required for hire.
- Knowledge of current literature trends in youth literature is essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of child development, particularly physical, emotional, and developmental patterns.
- A collaborative team player with experience working in a cooperative environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with students, small groups, teachers, and parents.
- Conflict resolution skills and a positive attitude.
- Strong organizational skills to effectively manage small group and individual needs.
- Ability to work with both small and large classroom groups.
- Experience working in an elementary school setting.
