Full job description

We are seeking an experienced and results-oriented Group Controller to provide financial leadership and oversight across a growing automotive dealership group. This confidential leadership opportunity is responsible for overseeing accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, cash management, payroll, and financial operations across multiple dealership locations and business entities.

The ideal candidate will have strong automotive dealership accounting experience, excellent knowledge of dealership financial statements and reporting requirements, and the ability to work closely with senior leadership to support sound financial decision-making and operational performance.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a finance professional who can bring structure, accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement to a multi-location dealership environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the accounting and financial operations of multiple automotive dealership locations and related entities.
  • Prepare, review, and consolidate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Review dealership financial statements, including sales, gross profit, expenses, departmental performance, and key financial ratios.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, payroll, cash management, and banking activities.
  • Monitor dealership cash flow, working capital, floorplan-related activity, and other key financial obligations.
  • Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, financial plans, and performance reports to support management decision-making.
  • Analyze financial results and investigate variances, trends, and areas of financial risk or opportunity.
  • Ensure accurate reconciliation of bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, manufacturer accounts, and other key general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and establish processes to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax requirements, manufacturer requirements, and regulatory obligations.
  • Coordinate and support year-end financial statement preparation and external audits.
  • Work closely with external accountants, auditors, financial institutions, manufacturers, and other professional advisors as required.
  • Review and improve accounting policies, procedures, systems, and processes across the dealership group.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel across multiple locations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, strengthen controls, and enhance financial reporting.
  • Provide senior leadership with timely financial analysis, recommendations, and business insights.
  • Support acquisitions, new dealership operations, system implementations, and other strategic financial initiatives as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial, employee, customer, and business information.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, preferably within an automotive dealership environment.
  • Previous experience as a Controller, Group Controller, Dealership Controller, or senior automotive accounting professional is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of automotive dealership accounting and financial statements.
  • Experience managing accounting operations across multiple locations or business entities is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP/ASPE and financial reporting principles.
  • Proficiency with dealership accounting systems and/or accounting platforms such as PBS, CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, Dealertrack, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar systems.
  • Strong understanding of dealership departmental accounting, vehicle inventory, parts and service operations, sales, F&I, commissions, and manufacturer-related accounting.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including financial analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent leadership and people-management skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-location environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with senior leadership and operational teams.
  • CPA designation or progress toward a CPA is considered an asset.
