Who We Are

Established in 1989, Daequip Premium Attachments Ltd. is one of the leading providers of high-quality, innovative manufacturing and customized design for the oil and gas, mining, forestry, and construction industries. With over 30 years of experience manufacturing attachments and accessories, hard work, dedication, and attention to detail go into every product we build. Daequip has been growing quickly in recent years, and we are seeking to add a successful candidate to our team.

Since 1969, Dormel Containers has been a proud Canadian, family-owned and operated small business serving the Waste, Recycling, Construction, Forestry, Oil and Gas, and Mining industries across British Columbia, Alberta, and the Pacific Northwest. About the Role

The Plant Controller is a hands-on manufacturing finance leader. You own accurate job costing, inventory and WIP control, cash flow, and timely financial reporting in a fabrication, welding, and heavy equipment attachments environment, across two companies that share a building, equipment, and people.

The business needs reliable answers to a few big questions: which products, customers, and job types make money; what steel really costs us once it lands; where margin leaks away; and what cash and capital we can count on. This role gives management that clarity and turns financial results into plain, practical insight for the people who run the shop.

Why This Role Matters Now

What the business is focused on, and how the Plant Controller helps.

Challenge

What the Plant Controller Does About It

Steel cost volatility and sourcing decisions

Builds and maintains a landed-cost view (price, freight, duty, FX, lead time, yield loss) so domestic and imported steel can be compared fairly and gets current steel costs into quotes and job costs.

Margin visibility across two companies and many product types

Reports job-level and product-line margins separately for Daequip and Dormel, including the true cost of custom orders compared with main-line production.

Tariff, US-market, and currency exposure

Tracks CAD/USD revenue and costs, quantifies the effect of tariffs and exchange rates on pricing and margin, and advises on pricing and cash timing.

A growing product range and order mix

Keeps costing and quoting accurate as standard and custom work grows, so growth adds profit as well as volume.

Capital investment in new equipment

Tracks project costs, supports any funder reporting, and follows results against the business case (cost, savings, payback) after commissioning.

Building a shared performance system across both companies

Supplies the financial KPIs and turns shop-floor data, such as production sheets and actual cycle times, into reliable standard costs and efficiency reporting.

Connecting engineering, shopfloor, and accounting data

Owns financial data discipline, documents how key numbers are produced, and improves ERP and reporting so information flows cleanly between departments.

Labour productivity and cost

Reports labour cost, overtime, rework, and efficiency by department so leaders can act on them and supports incentive or recognition programs with sound costing and payroll processing.

Tax credits and incentives (such as SR&ED)

Sets up cost and time capture so eligible work is documented and claims are supported.

Key Responsibilities

1. Job Costing & Margin Control (Critical)

  • Maintain and improve job costing for fabricated and welded assemblies, by company and product line.
  • Track and analyze labour by work centre (cutting, fitting, welding, machining, paint, assembly); steel plate, structural, pipe, and purchased components; and outside processing (heat treat, machining, paint).
  • Compare estimated and actual costs and explain variances clearly and quickly.
  • Work with Operations and Engineering to build standard costs from product structures (BOMs, routings, and standard times) and refine them as actual cycle times are collected.
  • Cost custom and one-off orders separately from main-line production, so their true margin is visible and does not hide in the main line.
  • Support estimating with historical labour standards, weld length and process assumptions, and rework and scrap feedback.
  • Identify margin leakage from rework, engineering changes, warranty, and material yield loss, and report root causes to the leaders who own the fix.

2. Inventory, Steel & WIP Control

  • Own inventory valuation for steel plate and shapes, purchased components, WIP welded assemblies, and finished goods.
  • Implement and enforce cycle counts (steel and parts), heat and lot tracking where required, and scrap and drop accounting.
  • Ensure WIP reflects the actual stage of completion and reconcile inventory and WIP to the GL monthly.
  • Track steel price variance and inventory turns, and flag exposure when steel prices move.

3. Steel Costing & Supplier Analysis

  • Build and maintain a landed-cost comparison of domestic suppliers and import options (freight, duty, exchange rate, lead time, minimum order, cut-to-size yield, and quality risk).
  • Support Purchasing with price and volume analysis before sourcing decisions and report actual results against the assumptions afterward.
  • Quantify how steel price changes flow through to product margins and quotes.

4. Manufacturing Financial Reporting

  • Lead the monthly close within 5–7 business days and reduce it over time.
  • Prepare management reports for each company and combined: job-level margins, product line profitability, labour efficiency and absorption, and overhead recovery against actual.
  • Provide a short weekly flash (sales, margin, cash, backlog) for the GM and leadership team.
  • Allocate shared costs (building, shared equipment, shared labour, and intercompany charges) on a clear, documented, and consistent basis.
  • Ensure compliance with ASPE / GAAP (Canada).

5. Labour, Overhead & Absorption

  • Maintain standard labour rates by department and keep overhead allocation current for welding consumables; power, gas, and shop supplies; and maintenance and depreciation.
  • Monitor absorption and under- or over-recovery, and partner with Operations to align routings, work centre capacities, and labour standards.
  • Report labour cost, overtime, rework hours, and onboarding cost by department, and share the trends with leaders monthly.

6. Cash Flow & Working Capital

  • Manage AR/AP and payroll oversight and prepare rolling cash flow forecasts with best-case and downside scenarios.
  • Improve working capital through steel inventory turns, WIP duration, progress billing, milestone invoicing, and collections discipline.
  • Manage CAD/USD exposure and timing of US receipts and payments.
  • Support banking and lender reporting.

7. Capital Projects, Grants & Tax Credits

  • Track capital project costs against budget, including major equipment projects, and support funder claims and reporting with accurate, well-organized documentation.
  • Follow the business case after commissioning: savings, capacity gains, and payback against plan.
  • Set up cost and time capture for SR&ED and similar programs and work with Engineering and external advisors to support annual claims.
  • Prepare costing and financial inputs for new-market bids and larger quotes, including government or institutional work.

8. Systems, ERP & Data Discipline

  • Own the financial integrity of the ERP system, and improve linkage between Engineering BOMs, shop-floor reporting (including daily production sheets), and accounting.
  • Reduce manual spreadsheets and reconciliations, and document how each key report and cost is produced so the process is repeatable.
  • Work with Operations and the ERP owners on the roadmap for job costing, inventory, and labour tracking enhancements.

9. Compliance, Audit & Controls

  • Maintain internal controls appropriate for a shop environment, including purchasing approvals, receiving, and payroll.
  • Coordinate the year-end review or audit and tax filings and ensure GST/PST compliance.
  • Keep financial records and reporting at a standard that lenders, funders, insurers, and investors would trust.

10. Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnering

  • Lead the accounting and bookkeeping team (AP, AR, payroll), and document procedures so the team is well covered.
  • Act as financial partner to the Operations Managers, Engineering, Estimating, Purchasing, and Sales.
  • Present results at the monthly KPI review with the GM, and translate financial results into plain, actionable insight for non-financial teams.

What Success Looks Like (12 Months)

  • Job margins are predictable and trusted, and custom orders are costed on their own.
  • Standard costs for the top products are built from product structures and actual cycle times, and efficiency against standard is reported weekly.
  • Steel, WIP, and finished goods variances are materially reduced, and a landed-cost comparison guides steel decisions.
  • Month-end close is completed in 7 business days or less, with separate and combined reports for Daequip and Dormel.
  • A rolling cash forecast with scenarios is in use, and capital and grant reporting is current and well documented.
  • Estimating accuracy improves through feedback loops.
  • Management can clearly see which attachments, containers, customers, and job types are most profitable.
