ABOUT THE YES
The YES (Youth Excellence Society) runs seven week-long cooperative leadership camps for teens at our site on
Lake Cowichan. Teens from over 90 BC communities come to take part in these transformational programs focusing on building community, self-worth, resiliency, mental wellness and leadership skills. We offer interactive and games based programming in the areas of self-awareness, co-operation, communication, global awareness, environmental sustainability and leadership. YES programs emphasize the importance of integrity and inclusion through social emotional learning (SEL), outdoor education, and critical and creative thinking. We believe that all teens deserve to belong to communities of care and respect that nurture their capacity for excellence.

Transportation to Cowichan Lake is provided, as well as meals and accommodations.

Compensation: Paid positions and volunteer positions available. Pay is based on a 35-hour workweek and negotiable based on experience and availability. We value our lifeguards highly, and pay competitive wages. Please be in touch about your expectations.

Additionally, in certain circumstances, The YES will help pay for certifications and insurance.

Qualifications: Valid NLS-Poolside

Ideal Candidate: A great opportunity for anyone looking to work with teens, gain volunteer or work experience relating to child and youth care, recreation, education and/or outdoor education.

POSITION SUMMARY
The lifeguard is a position that fulfills two critical areas of responsibility at camp. This position supports the practice of safety at all water related activities and throughout camp programming (hydration, sun-safety, etc). The lifeguard will provide instructions and emergency protocols to staff, volunteers and participants, prior to and during waterfront activities. Additionally, this position requires collaboration with a team of 15 YES Staff Members per week to create and facilitate leadership-centered programs and the general running of camp as a counselor.

The candidate will receive training support in facilitation, leadership, crisis response, and team building. All costs associated with this training are covered by The YES. Additionally, all new staff will receive on the job training and mentorship from experienced YES facilitators.

Responsibilities:
● Supervise swimming activities at lake front and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed
● Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforce water safety policies
● Develop and implement supportive, inclusive communities that encourages teens to challenge themselves and create positive change
● Be able to work independently and as a team
● Be understanding, compassionate, empathetic and a great communicator of needs, challenges, and goals
● Plan and facilitate interactive activities and sessions with YES Staff team for youth
