Senior Mining Geotechnical Engineer

The Ottawa office has an opening for a full-time Senior Mining/Geotechnical Engineer. The ideal candidate for this dynamic and challenging role should be capable of the following:

  • Provide technical direction on and/or senior review of mining projects and proposals.
  • Participate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams dedicated to the oversight of mine tailings management.
  • Participate effectively in the investigations and studies on potential mining projects.
  • Potentially involved in all stages of the design of Tailing storage facilities, dam design, tailings impoundment design, and/or waste rock storage facility design., from concept to construction.
  • Carry out preliminary site visits with clients, and occasional other site visits.
  • Conduct tailings dam inspections, dam safety reviews, and other studies related to the design and behaviour of tailings facilities.
  • Ensuring appropriate Quality Management System is applied on projects.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging opportunities, trends, regulatory requirements and best practices e.g., ICMM.
  • Providing practical and economic solutions to clients that differentiate the team.
  • Guide and oversee junior and intermediate engineers in scoping and conducting mining geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing, and identify training needs.
  • Collaborate with the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineers, Engineers of Record (EOR) and Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB) to implement and continuously improve the tailings governance and dam safety management systems.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree required in Civil (Geotechnical / Mining) or Geological Engineering required.
  • Post-graduate degree in fields related to mining geotechnical engineering would be an asset.
  • Registered/licensed in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng.).
  • 5-10 years of post-designation experience, preferably obtained in a mining project. Preference given to experience including mine geotechnical investigation and design, dam design, tailings impoundment design, and/or waste rock storage facility design.
  • Having the capacity of Engineer of Record (EOR) for tailings facilities would be an asset.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and manage cost-effective, practical solutions to client problems and/or potential non-compliance situations.
  • Strong ability to balance immediate and long-term work with varying priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable in both an office and field environment, depending upon assignment priorities.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with clients and co-workers.
  • Exceptional organizational and writing skills.
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in Canada.

  • Preference given to candidate able and willing to travel between offices and projects, in Canada and overseas.
