Full job description

Elevation Outdoors is Hiring! Come help us change lives and have fun doing it.

We are a Kelowna based non-profit that provides outdoor recreation programs to youth that provide instruction and life skill development through mentorship and play.

We are looking for energetic and passionate Program Leads to facilitate our outdoor recreation and education programs!

Position Summary:

We are seeking part-time, flexible Program Leads to support on a variety of programs starting in April. Successful applicants will start off supporting our spring programs: Leaders in Action, Take a Hike, Get a Grip, and Everyone Rides Gr. 4/5. Preferred candidates will have the ability to continue on in our summer 2024 season and onward.

As a Program Lead on our Everyone Rides program, you will facilitate a variety of bike safety courses to elementary school students (Grades 3 - 6) during school hours. Program Leads may work individually to teach in-class lessons or as part of a small team when teaching outdoor on-bike skills. Successful instructors believe in the multi-faceted benefits of cycling, bring enthusiasm and professionalism, and get joy from being active alongside children.

On our core programs, including the Leaders in Action, Take a Hike, and Get a Grip (climbing) programs, our Program Leads will co-facilitate sport-based, as well as a few classroom-based, sessions to youth aged 12 - 18. Sessions in the spring include mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and skill development sessions around leadership, life, and employment skills. Ideally, our Program Leads will then continue on with our summer programs (Live to Ride mountain biking program and summer camps) in July and August.

The role is part-time (typically 2 - 4 days/week) and the number of shifts may vary from week to week, depending on applicant's availability, school holidays, and programming needs. Program Leads travel within Kelowna, West Kelowna, and surrounding areas to instruct courses at elementary schools or sport venues (ie. Knox Mountain, Beyond the Crux climbing gym), and can expect some early morning start times with school-based programs and evening sessions with our core programs (as well as occasional weekend sessions if scheduled for outdoor climbing sessions). Some shifts may include transporting equipment, although owning a vehicle is not required. We are seeking candidates that can commit to supporting for our spring season (April - June 2024), though will prioritize candidates who are able to continue on into the summer season and beyond.

You're well suited to apply if you:

  • Believe in the benefits of outdoor recreations for individuals, communities, and the environment.
  • Value the right to participate in outdoor recreation amongst all ages and abilities.
  • Enjoy teaching children ranging from elementary aged (8 - 12) to youth (12 - 18), using enthusiasm, professionalism, and patience.
  • Have experience, gear and passion for the sports we teach (cycling, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, snowboarding)
  • Adapt well to different audiences, locations, coworkers, weather, and unforeseen changes.
  • Appreciate teamwork and can lead or work in a team to accomplish a common goal.
  • Are organized and on time.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Led children or youth programs in recreational activities in the past.
  • Basic bike maintenance knowledge or professional experience.
  • A BC driver's licence (particularly if Class 4 or above) and feel comfortable driving a minivan and bike trailer.
  • Coaching or any other relevant certification

You'll also need:

  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification or equivalency, or a willingness to self-organize and obtain (note: this course is more comprehensive than, and not equivalent to, Emergency First Aid or Occupational First Aid Level 1).
  • Bike Right certification, or availability to participate in HUB’s Advance Your Ride course held before the start of the season (April 3 and 4, 2024)
  • Clear Criminal Record Check for the vulnerable sector.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.
  • English fluency.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds for work.
  • Reliable access to a bicycle and helmet.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Co-facilitate Elevation Outdoors core programs: Implementing curriculum, building mentorship relationships with youth, and working with a team of staff and volunteers to deliver sport-based programs safely.
  • Teach bicycle safety: Deliver HUB’s core curriculums to participants across the Okanagan region, in a safe, engaging, and professional manner.
  • Respond to unforeseen events: Changes in weather/conditions, evolving group dynamics, injury, or participant behaviour.
  • Transport and set up equipment: Load, unload and transport equipment to programs using van and trailer (including bikes, helmets, station materials), and set up activities in advance of the sessions.
  • Prepare for programs: Take advantage of paid training and prep time to become comfortable and confident with the curriculums as well as the unique details of individual programs.
  • Communicate with all staff: While at programs, instructors are relied upon to ensure everyone involved is on the same page. They also provide key insight into the challenges, successes, and incidents to members of the Elevation Outdoors team.

Schedules & Locations:

Weekly Schedule: Part-time (2-4 days/week) positions are offered. The variability in the number of shifts is dependent on staff availability, school holidays, and programming needs. Schedules for all of spring will be released for the season once instructors complete training in first week of April 2024.

Locations: Schools in Kelowna and surrounding areas, sport venues such as Beyond the Crux, Knox Mountain, Rose Valley, Big White, etc., and in-class setting.

Mandatory Training Schedule:

Training dates are in the last weeks of March, first weeks of April. Two days of in-person training (April 3 and 4) are required to become a HUB Cycling certified Bike Education Instructor for the Everyone Rides Gr. 4/5 program, plus at minimum one week of orientation, training, and shadowing for Elevation Outdoors core programs.

Shifts will primarily between Monday - Friday in the spring, with added weekend shifts if scheduled on outdoor climbing sessions. Hours will fluctuate each week depending on the number of program dates we have in on any given week.
