Position Profile

The Black Business Initiative (BBI) is the longest serving Black business development initiative in Canada. We work to address the unique needs confronting Black businesses in Atlantic Canada and to build the community capacity of Black communities across Canada. Since its inception, our organization has grown to be a catalyst for job creation, equitable participation, and advancing economic prosperity across Canada.

BBI is currently administering a project under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) Program, a federally funded initiative which helps youth aged 15 to 30 overcome barriers to employment through tailored support, including mentorship, wrap-around services, and paid work experiences. The Program Coordinator (Youth Support & Academic Pathways) will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting youth participants as they navigate their academic and career journeys. This position is responsible for providing case management, mentorship, and resources to help participants overcome barriers and successfully transition into post-secondary education or employment.

This is a term position with an end date of March 31, 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Youth Case Management & Support Services

  • Conduct intake assessments and provide personalized academic and career counseling.
  • Offer one-on-one and group mentorship sessions to guide youth through career and education decisions.
  • Identify barriers to success (e.g., financial, social, emotional) and provide referrals to support services.

Academic Pathways & Post-Secondary Engagement

  • Develop partnerships with educational institutions to facilitate admissions, scholarships, and academic supports.
  • Organize campus tours, information sessions, and application workshops for participants.
  • Provide guidance on post-secondary applications, financial aid, and career pathway planning.

Workshop & Program Delivery

  • Coordinate life skills, leadership development, and personal growth workshops for youth.
  • Develop and distribute learning materials on academic success, financial literacy, and career planning.
  • Work closely with facilitators to tailor programming to participant needs.

Tracking & Impact Measurement

  • Maintain detailed case management records, tracking participant progress and outcomes.
  • Prepare program reports and contribute to program evaluation efforts.
  • Collect testimonials and success stories to highlight program impact.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education, Youth Development, Career Counseling, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in case management, youth support services, academic advising, or career development.
  • Strong knowledge of post-secondary education pathways, scholarships, financial aid programs, and employment readiness.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, training sessions, or group coaching for youth.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and support diverse youth populations.
  • Strong problem-solving and advocacy skills to help youth navigate barriers to education and employment.
  • · Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and culturally responsive programming is preferred.
  • Proficiency in data tracking, case management systems, and reporting on participant progress.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the experiences of Black businesses and communities in Canada, or willingness to learn.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and demonstrated expertise will be considered.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and experiences. In particular, preference will be given to individuals who reflect the diverse communities that will be impacted by this program’s outcomes. According to Employment and Social Development Canada, youth who face barriers to employment often include those who are Indigenous, Black or racialized, 2SLGBTQI+, youth from low income households, youth with disabilities, and youth living in rural communities. We recognize that lived experiences bring valuable perspectives that are crucial to the success of our work. We encourage applicants to self-identify in their cover letter.
