About the Role
The Pack Hall Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of harvesting and packaging at Haven Greens, ensuring that all leafy greens are cut, packaged, and prepared for delivery in line with customer orders and quality standards. This key leadership role is responsible for operating the fully automated open top mobile gulley baby leaf lettuce production system from Green Automation for transport and harvest of lettuces. In addition you will be operating a automated packaging line cosisting of an Ishida multi basket weighing system, a Heat & Control filling and tamping system, and a Multivac tray sealer.
The role combines hands-on operational management with team leadership, as the Pack Hall Manager will manage and support a team of workers in a fast-paced, refrigerated environment. The ideal candidate will balance efficiency, team morale, and food safety standards while driving continuous improvements in packaging operations and workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Operations: Lead and manage all cutting and packaging operations to meet daily production targets and ensure timely delivery of orders.
- Team Leadership: Oversee, coach, and develop a team of pack hall workers, ensuring a positive work environment and high levels of engagement and productivity.
- Scheduling & Workforce Management: Create work schedules, assign tasks, and ensure proper staffing levels to handle fluctuating order volumes.
- Quality Control: Ensure all products meet Haven Greens’ quality standards and that packaging processes adhere to food safety regulations.
- Equipment Management: Operate the Green Automation automated harvesting and mixing systems, the Ishida multi basket weighing system, the Heat and Control filling and tamping system, the Multivac tray sealing line and automated case erection, conveyance, case sealing, and pallet wrapping equipment. Troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with the maintenance team to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve output quality.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all workers adhere to health, safety, and food safety protocols, maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environment.
- Communication & Reporting: Coordinate with procurement, greenhouse operations, and distribution teams to ensure smooth daily operations, and provide reports on productivity, yield, and waste.
- Inventory Management: Track packaging materials and supplies, and communicate with procurement to ensure timely ordering and availability of necessary items.
- Training & Development: Ensure that new employees are properly trained and existing team members receive continuous development and upskilling opportunities.
- Problem Solving: Quickly and effectively address any operational or personnel issues, ensuring minimal disruption to the packaging process.
Candidate Profile
Must-Haves:
- 3+ years of experience in a refrigerated environment using multi head weighing systems and automated tray sealing lines.
- Proven track record of managing teams and delivering operational results.
- Proficiency in using basic digital tools and software, including Microsoft Office 365 and other common workplace applications.
- Strong understanding of food safety and quality standards (e.g., HACCP, GMP).
- Experience working with automated packing equipment.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility to work extended hours during peak periods.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience in the fresh produce industry, particularly leafy greens or other perishables.
- Familiarity with automated open top mobile gully cultivation systems, Ishida / Heat and Control weighing and filling systems, Multivac tray sealing packaging lines, and automated case erectors, automated case sealers, and pallet wrappers.
- Bilingual (English and a second language).
- Certification in food safety or operational management.
- Experience with lean manufacturing principles or process optimization.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, move, and walk for prolonged periods (75%+ of the workday).
- Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in a temperature-controlled environment (approximately 37°F or 3°C).
- Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-noise environment.
- Ability to bend, reach, and stoop as necessary.
