The Strathcona Museum & Archives ("Strathma") collects, preserves, promotes, and displays the history and heritage of Strathcona County. Located in Sherwood Park, Strathma strives to provide innovative, immersive experiences for visitors of all ages!

Strathma is seeking Museum Educators to join our summer team.

The Educators will support the Education and Engagement Coordinator in the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and community outreach activities. This role involves assisting with program logistics, engaging with diverse audiences, coordinating educational materials, and contributing to various outreach initiatives. They will also help manage data related to programs and visitors, support event planning, and work collaboratively with volunteers, staff, and other departments.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Positions are subject to successful funding through Canada Summer Jobs.

To be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of educational programs and activities.
  • Provide support during presentations and workshops to various audiences, including students and community groups.
  • Prepare and organize educational materials and resources.
  • Assist in the planning, execution, and evaluation of events and outreach activities.
  • Help manage and maintain visitor and program data.
  • Support the coordination and training of volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to assist with promotional materials and social media content.
  • Work with the collections team to help facilitate exhibit tours, related programming, and education collection development.
  • Aid in the preparation of reports and other documentation related to programming.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

The role involves a mix of office work and active participation in community outreach and educational events. The position may require occasional evening hours and overtime to support events and special programs.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing or having completed coursework in art history, history, archaeology, museum studies, cultural studies, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to varying needs and priorities.
  • Basic technical skills in using social media platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with museum practices, educational strategies, and community engagement.

Other Requirements:

  • Fluent in English; additional languages are an asset.
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector check upon hiring.
  • Access to a personal vehicle for commuting to outreach events as needed.
  • The ability to lift up to 20 lbs, set up for events, and move between various environments is preferred, but not essential.

Work Schedule / Attire:

  • Hours will vary depending on program and event schedules.
  • Attire should be smart casual – appropriate to the nature of the activity and setting.
