Overview
Falcon Heights Contracting is looking for a Lead Carpenter to join our team building custom homes across Greater Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island.
This isn't production work. Our projects are one-of-a-kind — architecturally designed homes where every detail matters and no two builds are the same. You'll lead a small crew through everything from foundations and framing to finishing and envelope work, working closely with our Site Supervisors and Construction Manager to deliver homes our clients and our team are proud of.
We're a team of about 15-20, and we hire good people first. If you bring strong carpentry skills, genuine leadership, and the kind of attitude that makes everyone around you better, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
- Lead, assign, and coach a crew of 2-6 carpenters, apprentices, and labourers on active custom residential projects.
- Perform or verify critical layouts — foundations, walls, openings, blocking — and resolve dimensional conflicts before work proceeds.
- Read and interpret detailed blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine project requirements and ensure precise execution.
- Conduct quality checks at key milestones and promptly correct deficiencies. Prepare work for municipal and third-party inspections.
- Assist with the two- to three-week look-ahead schedule; coordinate day-to-day sequencing between trades on site to maintain flow.
- Produce accurate material take-offs, inspect deliveries, and flag shortages to maintain project readiness.
- Provide day-to-day direction to subcontractors on site when delegated by the Site Supervisor. Identify conflicts and escalate for decisions, pricing, or RFIs.
- Maintain daily logs with photos in JobTread; communicate status, risks, and resource needs to the Site Supervisor.
- Mentor carpenters and apprentices on site — demonstrate techniques, evaluate progress, and support their development.
- Lead tailgate safety meetings and enforce WorkSafeBC and FHC safety requirements. Maintain a safe, clean, organized site.
- Champion building-science details, prefabricated assemblies, and sustainable methods that improve efficiency and performance.
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Red Seal Carpenter Certificate with 5+ years of journeyperson experience, including 2+ years leading crews
- Advanced blueprint reading, complex framing, high-performance envelope assemblies, and precise layout skills
- Working knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and envelope coordination
- Demonstrated ability to lead crews, coordinate subcontractors on site, and communicate effectively with site leadership
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence with a clean abstract and reliable vehicle
- Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, working at heights, and performing in varying weather conditions
Preferred:
- Experience in custom residential construction (not just production or commercial)
- Occupational First Aid Level 2 with Transport Endorsement or Level 3
- Familiarity with construction management software (we use JobTread)
Compensation & Benefits
Pay: $39.90 – $47.25/hour (2026 rates, based on experience)
First Aid Premiums:
- OFA Level 3: +$2.00/hour
- OFA Level 2 + Transport: +$0.50/hour
Schedule & Work-Life Balance:
- 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday, year-round
- 8-hour days, 30-minute paid break
- 2 scheduled shutdowns per year (2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week in summer) — dedicated time off the team can count on for family, travel, or rest.
- Occasional overtime for critical milestones only — this is not an overtime-dependent role
Health & Wellness:
- Health Spending Account (after 90 days): $850/yr with progressive increases based on tenure
Growth & Development:
- Training roadmap developed with your Site Supervisor and Construction Manager
- Industry courses, safety certifications, and leadership development supported by the company
- Access to VICA and CHBA training programs
- Annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment to wages (2.5% for 2026)
Why Falcon Heights
We've been building custom homes on Vancouver Island since 2009. Our work ranges from architecturally designed waterfront properties to complex hillside builds — projects that challenge your skills and push the craft forward.
What makes us different from other builders:
The work itself. Every project is unique. You'll work on homes designed by some of the Island's best architects and designers, solving problems that don't have a template answer. If you're the kind of carpenter who takes pride in getting the details right, you'll fit in here.
How we treat our team. We hire people we respect and give them the trust and support to do their best work. Our Site Supervisors lead, not micromanage. Our crew culture is built on collaboration — everyone contributes, everyone learns, and no one's above picking up a broom.
Craftsmanship matters here. We don't cut corners to hit timelines. Quality is non-negotiable, and the people who thrive with us are the ones who feel the same way.
Your growth is supported. We invest in our team through training, mentorship, and clear development pathways. We're a proud Built Green Canada member, committed to sustainable building practices — and we'll help you build expertise in high-performance building science alongside your carpentry skills.
How to Apply
Apply through Indeed with your resume. We'll also ask you to answer a few questions about your experience as part of the application process.
