Position Title: Jet Boat Captain Trainee – Full Time Seasonal, April through October

Reports To: General Manager

Position Overview: Jet Boat Captains are responsible for expertly maneuvering our jet boat vessels on the river, ensuring the safety of all guests and crew while delivering an exciting and memorable experience. This role also includes performing daily maintenance on the vessels and collaborating with team members to uphold operational standards and schedules.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN! Our Jet Boat Captains have the most important role at Whirlpool Jet. They operate our triple-turbo diesel vessels through our whitewater playground - the Class V rapids of the Niagara Gorge. A commitment to safety, and professionalism (and taking guests on the ride of their life!) is essential for this position. If you want to be the driver behind 1500 horsepower & 31,000 lbs of thrust, then this is the job for you. Current First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred but all training and certifications are provided in-house for successful candidates.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to learn from a certified captain and take constructive criticism. Must be able to listen and correct any actions as needed
  • Safely maneuver jet boat vessels on the river, adhering to company protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain constant awareness of river conditions, guest safety, and operational schedules to ensure smooth and secure trips.
  • Ensure the safety of all passengers and crew by following established safety procedures and Transport Canada regulations.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of the vessel to identify and address any potential issues.
  • Perform daily maintenance tasks, including checking mechanical systems, fluid levels, and overall vessel functionality.
  • Address minor repairs as needed and report any significant issues to the General Manager and Mechanical Team for resolution.
  • Ensure the vessel is clean, organized, and in top operational condition at all times.
  • Work closely with crew members, including River Guides and Dock Hands, to maintain efficient operations and a positive guest experience.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to crew members to foster teamwork and uphold safety and service standards.
  • Interact with guests in a friendly and professional manner, answering questions and contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Enhance the guest experience by showcasing knowledge of the river and maintaining a fun, energetic environment during trips.
  • Comply with all Transport Canada regulations and company policies related to vessel operation, safety, and maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation as required for regulatory compliance and operational tracking.

Ideal Candidate would have or acquire:

  • Excellent oral communication – confident when speaking in person and in front of large groups of guests
  • Punctuality and respect of time constraints and demands when serving large numbers of people
  • Current basic marine First Aid and CPR training preferred
  • Experience working in/around water and/or boats are considered assets
  • Fluency in other languages is considered an asset
  • MED DVS course is preferred
  • Maritime VHF course preferred

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours has been giving passengers a taste of adventure on the white water of the Niagara River since 1992. Passengers experience a thrilling and educational one-hour guided tour, where they can take in the awe-inspiring scenery of the Niagara Gorge, feel the rush of the Class 5 Devil’s Hole rapids and marvel at the power of the Niagara Whirlpool. The tour company’s fleet of custom-built jet boats depart from locations on the Canadian and American sides of the Niagara River, including Queenston, ON and Lewiston, NY.
