Intermediate Mining Geotechnical Engineer

The Ottawa office has an opening for a full-time Intermediate Mining/Geotechnical Engineer. The ideal candidate for this dynamic and challenging role should be capable of the following:

  • Conduct thorough desktop analyses, assess risks, and interpret findings from ground investigations to formulate ground models.
  • Carry out on-site engineering data analyses on Canadian and international projects and determine appropriate actions for follow-up.
  • Assist with preparation of scope and specification, supervision, and management of mining geotechnical investigations.
  • Collaborate with other team members on collecting geotechnical data, soil and rock and ore samples and performing in situ testing using standard and advanced coring and sampling techniques.
  • Carry out Mining Geotechnical Investigations, including CPT, coring, sampling, and ensuring correct procedure for drilling of boreholes.
  • Conduct detailed logging of mining cores to classify soil, rock, and ore samples, and perform index and strength testing on collected samples.
  • Properly preserve mining and ore samples for transportation to Paterson’s laboratory for testing.
  • Provide technical support and evaluation for tailings storage facilities design, dam design, tailings impoundment design, and/or waste rock storage facility design.
  • Supervise and guide junior engineers and field technicians conducting sampling and in situ/field laboratory testing and identifying training necessities.
  • Follow up with Paterson’s and client-mandated Health, Safety, and Environmental protocols consistently.
  • Thoroughly review all mining geotechnical testing, data processing, interpretation, and subsequent reporting to ensure quality.
  • Assist the Client's Site Representative in planning, coordinating, and overseeing field data acquisition and sampling tasks.
  • Prepare daily field observation reports, maintaining open communication about progress with the client representative.
  • Produce field reports using Quality Management Systems (QMS) reporting protocol and procedures, comprising of sampling, in situ testing, and index testing procedures and results.
  • Provide support for proposal development, data interpretation, and review, as well as engineering reporting; assist in project planning and mobilization for mining geotechnical investigations; quality assurance; and maintain client interaction.
  • Attend meetings with clients, such as design reviews, presenting study findings, tender presentations, and any necessary engagements.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree required in Civil (Geotechnical / Mining) or Geological Engineering required.
  • Registered/licensed in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng.).
  • 2-5 years of post-designation experience, preferably obtained in relevant mining projects.
  • Experience and knowledge with Geotechnical drilling, settlement analyses, slope stability assessments.
  • Experience writing proposals, specifications, case studies, technical and non-technical reports.
  • Solid understanding of provincial and federal regulatory requirements acquired through experience and education.
  • Strong technical understanding of field data collection, instrumentation, monitoring and sampling techniques.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and manage cost-effective, practical solutions to client problems and/or potential non-compliance situations.
  • Strong ability to balance immediate and long-term work with varying priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable in both an office and field environment, depending upon assignment priorities.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with clients and co-workers.
  • Exceptional organizational and writing skills.
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in Canada.

Physical Requirements

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Additional Information
