Full job description

Role: Finance Manager
Status: Contract, On-Call (5 - 10 hours/week)
Location: Vancouver, BC – Hybrid

Who we are

The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based organization, formed in 2019 and registered as a non-profit in 2020, dedicated to addressing the structural inequities created by racism—especially anti-Black racism—within education settings in British Columbia.

The organization was born out of a crisis in our community, following a racist bomb threat at a Vancouver high school, Lord Byng Secondary. The harm caused by that incident extended beyond the students at the school and was felt deeply by the wider Black community.

While the 'Lord Byng incident' marked the catalyst for our formation, BCCA is fundamentally a response to the broader, ongoing experiences of racialized students across BC.

Who we’re looking for

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with accuracy and transparency
  • Ensure financial reporting aligns with Canadian accounting standards

Grant and Fund Management

  • Track grant expenditures, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements
  • Support the development of financial reports for donors, partners, and grantors
  • Work closely with the HR/Admin and Development teams to align financials with fundraising

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local, provincial, and federal financial regulations
  • Monitor financial risks and provide mitigation strategies and solutions

Financial Systems and Controls

  • Maintain and enhance financial control systems, policies, and procedures
  • Implement tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Zoho, Xero) to streamline reporting and improve efficiency

Stakeholder Communication

  • Liaise with funders, auditors, and financial institutions as the financial point of contact
  • Provide clear financial insights to leadership and board members to support strategic planning

Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Mentor and support administrative or finance team members
  • Foster a collaborative and professional culture of transparency and innovation

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (CPA designation is an asset)
  • At least 5 years of financial management experience, ideally in nonprofit, retail, or social enterprise sectors
  • Comfort working with complex budgets across multiple organizational entities
  • Strong technical skills in financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, Zoho Books, Xero)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting practices, impact investing, or cooperative models is an asset
  • Commitment to equity, integrity, and long-term community impact

What we offer

  • On-Call at $25–$35/hour (depending on experience)
  • Flexible work environment with hybrid options based in Vancouver
  • An opportunity to support one of BC’s leading Black-led organizations and contribute to meaningful, community-driven work
  • A collaborative and passionate team environment that supports growth and learning
