Victim Services of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne

Background

Victim Services of S.D.G. & A. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance to individuals who have been victimized as a result of a crime or tragic circumstance. Our agency works in partnership with police as well as emergency responders and other community-based services to ensure victims receive the help they need to assist them in the development of their personal path to wellness.

The agency is currently seeking to fill a permanent full time position for our Family Court Support Worker program who will be responsible for assisting victims of domestic/intimate partner violence as they navigate the family court process. This full-time bilingual position is expected to work 35 hours per week, reporting primarily to the Supervisor of Client Services and secondarily to the Executive Director.

The position supports the communities of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne for matters before the Superior Court in Cornwall, Ontario and also supports the communities of Prescott-Russell for matters before the Superior Court in L’Orignal Court, Ontario.

Duties and Responsibilities

Client and Service Delivery/Program Support:

  • Adhere and comply with agency Policies and Procedures, Ministry directives and program eligibility guidelines.
  • Provide services covering the Cornwall Courthouse (Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne) and the L’Orignal Courthouse (Prescott-Russell).
  • Conduct needs assessment, complete intakes with clients, answer questions and assess eligibility.
  • Record client activities and maintain client files based on sound case management principles and established process.
  • Provide services and assistance to victims accessing the Mobile Tracking System (MTS) Program.
  • Discuss the clients’ role and other parties’ role in the family court process without providing legal advice.
  • Discuss clients’ safety needs and complete comprehensive safety plans as required.
  • Make necessary referrals to community services, including Duty Counsel and offering support in completing forms.
  • Assist clients with the Legal Aid process.
  • Debrief with clients after court or lawyer appointments, Family Law Information Centre or Duty Counsel meetings.
  • Assist clients with applications for housing.
  • Assist clients with applications for Legal Aid Ontario.
  • Make recommendations to the Supervisor of Client Services and the Executive Director regarding service experience enhancements.

Community Involvement and Outreach:

  • Liaise with community partners, respond to a variety of telephone inquiries from community services and the public; provide information regarding the Family Court Support Worker Program and Victim Services of S.D.G. & A
  • Attend and represent the Family Court Support Worker Program and all services offered by Victim Services at public events as requested.
  • Travel to the counties of Prescott-Russell and throughout Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne, and liaise with community agencies to aid in public education as requested.
  • Participate in various committees, networks or coalitions pertaining to domestic/intimate partner violence and the Family Court process.

Program Evaluation and Improvement:

  • Collect and incorporate information gathered through the evaluation process to ensure effective program and service delivery;
  • Generates monthly and quarterly statistical reports for the program for the Executive Director; and
  • Contribute and participate in Team meetings to improve service and program provision, Team efficiencies and cohesiveness.

Administrative/Office Support:

  • Ensure that policies and procedures are followed and contribute to efficiencies of the program and of the team.
  • Ensure that all required statistical information is collected and documented as per established mechanisms, policies and procedures.

The Ideal Candidate Would Possess:

  • A degree/diploma in the Social or Human Services field
  • Minimum two (2) years experience working in the social or human services field and/or issues affecting victims.
  • Crisis intervention experience/education an asset
  • Possess a strong understanding of the Ontario Family Court process.
  • Consent to a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Background Check
  • Swear or affirm an Oath of Confidentiality
  • A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes
  • Strong people skills and ability to maintain good working relationships with police services and community members.
  • The ability to maintain strict confidentiality around all issues regarding calls for service to victims, information shared in volunteer training/debriefing and information about the organization, volunteers and staff members.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Conscientious in completing all necessary documentation with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours/on-call hours and travel throughout the counties.
  • Excellent computer knowledge (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet); ability to design/work with spreadsheets.
  • Bilingual (written, spoken) in both English and French.

Salary Range Based on Experience and Qualifications: $48,230-51,178
