OUR SERVICES
Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees’ (VICCIR) principal activity is to provide mental health counselling services to immigrants and refugees living on Vancouver Island and other parts of B.C.
COUNSELLING
Our counselling services are grounded on the recognition that each individual is unique, and treatment plans are tailored accordingly. Cultural norms are respected as is the value of expressing oneself in one’s own language.
If a counsellor does not speak a client’s language, one of VICCIR’s interpreters serves as a bridge, both linguistic and cultural.
VICCIR’s objectives for all clients are to:
- Reduce the debilitating symptoms of trauma
- Increase personal resiliency and self-mastery required to improve quality of life, and
- Assist and support immigrants and refugees to find within themselves an eagerness to participate in the communities that welcome each of them
This position reports to: Board of Directors
In this role you:
- Set the vision and mandate of Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees (VICCIR) together with the Board of Directors
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the work, lead, and manage the overall operations of VICCIR within the strategic vision, goals and objectives established by the Board of Directors
- Ensure financial sustainability through development and execution of fundraising initiatives
- Work closely with the various section directors to make sure that high quality of services are maintained
- Provide direction to the Fundraising and Communication Coordinator regarding grants and newsletters to provide statistical and other information, as required to ensure financial performance, client satisfaction, effective service delivery, quality management, engagement, and growth within the community
- Advise the Board of Directors regarding policies, operational issues, and organizational effectiveness
- Research, develop, and present information, recommendations, and alternatives on a wide range of initiatives
- Actively participate in related community activities, and initiatives
- Lead, administer, and manage VICCIR’s operations within their strategic goals and objectives
- Ensure effective financial administration and management with ongoing monitoring of cash flow to support growth and sustainability
- Provide a comprehensive report to the Board of Directors at each Board meeting
- Represent VICCIR by providing training, orientation, presentations, networking, and advocacy work
- Attend meetings and conferences, as requested
- Foster mutually beneficial relationships with partners and like-minded organizations
- Orient and train other members of staff by providing representative work for VICCIR
- Recruit Counselors, Interpreters, Supervisors, and other staff, as required
- Coordinate the training and supervision of VICCIR Counselors and Interpreters
- Provide overview and supervision to several of the Counselors
- Provide Mental Health counseling when needed and associated tasks such as preparation, debriefing, note writing
- Act as a signatory for VICCIR cheques, e-transfers, contracts, and other similar documents
- Assist and support the Board of Directors in establishing and revising strategic goals and objectives as appropriate
- Develop, implement, and consistently review operational policies, procedures, and practices to ensure they remain current
- Act as liaison between the Board of Directors and Community Partners
- Lead and provide direction to address complex issues and interpretation of legislative requirements, ensuring best practices are consistent and in compliance with business standards
- Lead teams through transformative changes requiring fundamental shifts in service delivery practices
- Provide input on the development of new projects and contribute to the oversight of related executions
Attend Board of Director meetings as required
- Work in partnership with the Board, ensure Directors have information required to maintain due diligence and conduct their work effectively and efficiently
- Advise on necessary transformational goals with broad perspectives and long-term timelines
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, and retention
1. Educational Background
- Possess an advanced degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, Public Administration or a related field
2. Leadership and Management Experience
- Proven experience in leading non-profit organizations preferably in the mental health or immigrant/refugee support sectors
- Strong skills in strategic planning, team management and program development
- Experience working with diverse teams, including clinical professionals and interpreters
3. Fundraising and Financial Acumen
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, including grant writing, donor relations, and securing funding from government and private sources
- Proficiency in budget management and financial oversight to ensure sustainability
4. Cultural Competency
- Deep understanding of the challenges faced by immigrants and refugees, including cultural sensitivity and awareness
- Ability to foster an inclusive environment that respects diverse backgrounds and experiences
5. Communication and Advocacy Skills
- Exceptional communication skills to represent the organization to stakeholders, donors and the community
- Advocacy experience to promote mental health awareness and influence policy changes
6. Knowledge of Mental Health Services
- Familiarity with mental health counseling practices, trauma informed care, and the unique needs of immigrant and refugee populations
- Understanding of regulatory and ethical standards in mental health services.
7. Board and Stakeholder Relations
- Experience working with a Board of Directors, including reporting, collaboration, and governance
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with community partners, funders, and policymakers
8. Personal Attributes
- Passion for the mission of supporting mental health for immigrants and refugees
- Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability and resilience in the face of challenges
