Position: Executive Director
Reports To: Board of Directors
Location: Westlock, Alberta (45 mins from St. Albert)
Start Date: August 2025 or as negotiated
Terms: Full time
Compensation: Starting $90,000 per annum, commensurate with experience
About Westlock Independence Network (WIN):
Westlock Independence Network (WIN) is a non-profit organization based in Westlock, Alberta, committed to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, physical challenges, and brain injuries. Since 1987, WIN has provided personalized, community-based services that promote independence, dignity, and inclusion. WIN’s approach focuses on empowering individuals to actively participate in their own lives and communities, offering support that is flexible and tailored to each person’s unique needs.
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Board, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial management of the organization. This role requires a visionary and pragmatic leader with deep knowledge of the human services sector, capable of advancing the organization’s mission while ensuring excellence in service delivery, fiscal integrity, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership and Management:
- Provide visionary leadership to the organization, aligning all activities with WIN’s mission, the principles of Gentle Teaching and strategic goals.
- Oversee the strategic direction of the organization, including the development and implementation of long-term strategies and objectives
- Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture and ensure staff have the resources and support they need to succeed.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement by regularly assessing the organization's performance and seeking opportunities for growth and development.
- Ensure the organization complies with all legal and regulatory requirements by developing and implementing risk management strategies to protect the organization and its stakeholders.
2. Operational Planning & Program Management:
- Oversee, evaluate and implement high-impact human service programs and initiatives that meet community needs and aligns with Win’s strategic priorities.
- Oversee the operations of all administrative and operational departments ensuring efficiency, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Lead policy development and organizational decision-making that reflects the agency’s core values and public service commitments.
3. Financial Oversight:
- Lead financial planning, budget development, and fiscal control in partnership with the board.
- Oversee the management of the organization’s annual budget by allocating financial resources in alignment with strategic goals and operational priorities.
- Administer financial policies and processes that ensure transparency, financial stability, sustainability, and legal compliance.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to the Board, funders, and regulatory agencies.
4. Board Relations:
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to develop policies, set strategic goals, and ensure effective governance.
- Provide regular updates on the organization's progress and challenges.
- Ensure and maintain a transparent, productive relationship with the Board, supporting its governance, decision-making, and fiduciary oversight responsibilities.
- Assist in the recruitment and orientation of new board members.
5. Community Engagement and Advocacy:
- Lead fundraising strategies and efforts to expand and diversify funding sources.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with donors, government agencies, community stakeholders and other nonprofits to ensure support and collaboration.
- Oversee all external communications (website, social media etc.) to ensure a consistent and compelling message.
- Responsible for representing the organisation and appropriately delegating representatives for (at) official functions, public events, forums etc.
- Advocate for the rights and needs of people with disabilities at local, provincial, and national levels. This may include participating in public policy development and engaging in public awareness campaigns.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, General Management, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a management-leadership role preferably in a non-profit organization in the Human service (disability) sector.
- Skills: Strong leadership, strategic planning, fundraising, financial management, and communication skills.
- Attributes: Passionate about WIN’s mission, empathetic, adaptable, proven ability to focus on continuous improvement and able to work collaboratively.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend work.
- Travel within Alberta may be required.
