Director of Long-Term Care & Resident Services

Position Overview:
Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Long-Term Care & Resident Services is responsible for all aspects of Long term care and the day-to-day care delivery within the Long-Term Care Programs which include the Memory Care Cottages and the Complex Care Lodge.
Summary of Role Responsibilities
The Director provides interdisciplinary leadership to the program team in attaining the program goals and objectives including the collection of data related to key performance management, budget administration and control and adherence to licensing requirements.
- Leads members of the program team, residents and families in the development of person-centered, comprehensive care plans tailored to the individual’s short and long term goals and health needs.
- Ensures multidisciplinary participation in the delivery of care according to individual care plans.
- Develops, implements, controls and evaluates program goals and objectives, policies and procedures in a timely manner to ensure clinical standards are maintained.
- Champions the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of program team outcomes; ensures overall objectives are consistent with the changing needs of the resident population.
- Participates in policy development and decision making particularly in matters relating to continuous quality improvement, health and safety, financial, human resources and risk management.
- Participates in the strategic planning process to develop goals and objectives that support the Hawthorne Seniors Care Community mission and vision.
- Provides leadership and direction to Resident Care Coordinators and other program staff by fostering and promoting new initiatives; mentoring and role modeling; interpreting care related policies and procedures and maintaining effective communication links within the program and with the other programs.
- Develops, organizes, directs and monitors the program hiring process, staff orientation and education.
- Responsible for ensuring a high level of staff morale and that people feel appreciated and valued. Contributes to ensuring all care staff believe that the organization is a positive place to work.
- Fosters a culture of support with ongoing coaching and encouragement.
- Monitors financial indicators to ensure program budget targets are met. Develops and implements systems and processes that create operational efficiencies and maximize program effectiveness.
- Prepares and presents program reports, on a regular basis, outlining overall performance for the program team in the attainment of the overall goals and objectives of the program. Sets and reports on quarterly and annual program team goals.
- Stays abreast of industry changes and developments in care, clinical practice, housing and services for seniors. Makes recommendations for program changes in the delivery of services for residents.
- Develops and utilizes effective communication systems which facilitate the dissemination of timely, accurate information throughout the program. Conducts staff meetings monthly and conducts a staff, resident and family satisfaction survey annually. Plans, implements and evaluates change brought about as a result of input from staff, residents and families.
- Works effectively with other program directors, residents and their families, members of the community, and regional and governmental representatives to maintain positive working relationships and uphold the reputation of the care home as a quality service provider.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
- Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia.
- Completion of relevant Master’s degree preferred (e.g. Masters in Healthcare Administration, Leadership, or Business) OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- A Master’s Degree and/or certificate, diploma or degree in gerontology would be an asset.
- Proven experience in a leadership role within a healthcare or senior living setting
- First Aid / CPR / OFA Level 2 an asset
- A minimum of 10 years Health Care leadership/management experience including minimum of 5 years management experience in Long-Term care.
- Clinical expertise related to chronic and geriatric care including Psychogeriatrics.
- Clinical expertise related to the care of residents with dementia and other psycho-geriatrics conditions.
Skills and Abilities
- Proven ability to build, lead and direct an engaged and cohesive multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong leadership skills that support a servant leadership approach to management and a client centered approach to care.
- Effective interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task, manage time effectively, and prioritize work.
- Ability to prioritize daily tasks as well as long term goals and objectives
- Ability to plan, direct, evaluate and control the delivery of multi-faceted care services.
- Proficiency with computers including Microsoft 365, Point Click Care (PCC) and various business applications and programs.
- Ability to track, trend, and measure care metrics using PCC reporting functionality or other data tracking tools
- Proficient in RAI / MDS assessments, submission and corrections as well as pulling CIHI date and reports
- Proven financial, human resource management, communication and organizational skills.
- Strong problem solving, decision making and analytical skills
