Discrimination and hate offences

This policy applies to all employers and job seekers on Indeed. Our goal is to make job searches fair, safe, and welcoming. Indeed doesn't allow hate speech, discrimination, or offensive content at any time while using the platform. We may remove, hide, or suspend job posts or accounts that violate this policy.

Policy requirements

Age

  • Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on age
  • Employers may include minimum age requirements only if required by law.
    • The age of majority differs by province and territory.
    • Exceptions are allowed for certain cases, like car insurance, some federal or provincial programs, and student programs.
  • Phrases that suggest generational preference, such as "digital native," are not allowed.

National origin

  • Jobs may not exclude or target people based on national origin, ethnicity, or accent.
  • You may give preference to First Nations, Aboriginal people, Native, or Indigenous peoples when hiring.
  • Language requirements may be listed, but the wording must be neutral. For example:
    • Do: "Fluent in French and English"
    • Don't: "English must be your first language."

Race/Ethnicity

  • Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on age
  • Race is not a factor in job ability, and any mention of racial preference is not allowed.
  • Limited exceptions exist for acting or modelling roles.

Religion

  • Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on age
  • Religion may only be mentioned if it is directly tied to the job (for example, roles in places of worship or faith-based schools).

Gender and sexual orientation

  • Jobs may not show preference or exclusion based on sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
  • Consider replacing gendered job titles with neutral terms. For example:
    • Do: "chairperson" or "server"
    • Don't: "chairman" or "waitress"
  • Limited exceptions may apply for acting, modelling, healthcare, or childcare roles.

  • Physical appearance (tattoos, piercings, weight, hair colour)
  • Socio-economic status
  • Smoking habits (except in rare cases, such as childcare roles)

Identity-based insults, targeted abuse, and hate speech

  • We don't allow hate speech or targeted abuse in any form.
  • Hate speech may include:
    • Slurs
    • Threats:
    • Content that promotes hostility towards a person or group

Offensive content

  • Content that is vulgar, profane, or demeaning is not acceptable.
  • References to mental health disorders in casual or inaccurate ways (for example, "must be OCD") are not acceptable.
  • We may remove content including swear words or sexual language.

Photo requests

  • Employers may request a passport photo or headshot as part of the application process.
