2030 ESG Commitments

Achieve net zero in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

Carbon neutrality involves counterbalancing Indeed’s full GHG footprint by purchasing carbon offsets that remove, avoid, or reduce GHG emissions. Our net zero strategy focuses on decreasing Indeed’s emissions by purchasing carbon offsets to remove, avoid, or reduce emissions beyond our own operational and value chain footprint.

We’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint by decreasing our in-office, work from home, travel-related, and vendor emissions (i.e. scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions). We’ll also avoid greenhouse gas emissions for our customers through the use of our products and services.

Indeed has a vision for an equitable world of work, one where job seekers from underserved communities have equal access to quality opportunities. We also know that climate change disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable. https://www.indeed.com/esg/net-zero-ghg-emissions?co=US#footnote-1 In order to help all people get jobs, especially people facing barriers, we must do everything in our power to combat climate change and support the transition to a global low-carbon economy.

Our approach to net zero

Move towards renewable sources of energy, and increase the operational efficiency of Indeed facilities

Workplaces represent the most direct source of emissions produced by Indeed from our electricity and fuel usage. We’re working to:

  • improve energy efficiency across existing offices, and ensure any new office spaces are highly efficient
  • shift from Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to high-impact utility programs, through providers like Austin Energy or Energia in Dublin.
investigate how to lower our reliance on fossil fuels for heating through efficiency measures and electrification
  • reduce how much waste ends up in landfills

Support our employees in reducing their employee commuting, work from home, business travel, and other processes that impact their individual footprint

Areas such as employees commuting to work, work from home, and business travel all contribute to greenhouse gas emissions that Indeed is working to reduce. We are taking action by:

  • developing strategies for employee commute programs
  • conducting an annual survey to identify opportunities for supporting Indeedians in reducing emissions while working from home
  • learning how to lower our business travel footprint

Collaborate with vendors across our value chain to collectively reduce our climate impact

Vendor sustainability at Indeed focuses on emissions associated with the goods and services procured to run our business.

We aim to promote climate-focused practices throughout our value chain by engaging and partnering with vendors to reduce our environmental impact. We do this through improved data collection to support reporting, and developing decarbonization plans to reduce our emissions in our joint work and high-emitting areas.

We want to work with our vendors to support lowering carbon emissions, reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting renewable resources. These partnerships help both the vendors and Indeed meet their environmental commitments while contributing to a healthier planet.

To get started, we have created this Climate Resource Guide to support our vendors in their decarbonization journey.

Support and engage job seekers and employers to contribute towards a just and equitable green transition through our products and services, all while adopting green software engineering practices to reduce the footprint of our products

Our Indeed Interview platform allows employers to conduct virtual video interviews with job seekers around the world. Indeed Interview helps eliminate the need for job seekers to physically travel to a location for an interview, leading to an avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions.

In FY2022, 31,634 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent were avoided through Indeed Interview, the equivalent of keeping 7,529 gas vehicles off the road for one year. As per the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalency Calculator, January 2024 update. Methodology verified by SCS Global Services. Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions were calculated from job seeker activity pulled from April 2021 to March 2022. As we grow the use of our interview platform, the amount of greenhouse gas avoided will increase.

Indeed has partnered with Ad Net Zero since April 2023 to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This partnership was formed to establish measurement methodologies and best practices to reduce emissions in our advertising verticals including production, media buying, and events, as part of this mission.

Indeed has contributed to an industry “Sustainable Events Starter Guide” to help event professionals and company leaders implement sustainability best practices for events.

Indeed also participates in Ad Net Zero working groups to drive industry-wide change.

Indeedians across the globe contribute to a greener Indeed — and a greener world of work

iGreen

iGreen is an employee-led environmental business resource group (EBRG) that helps to influence and drive our sustainability goals. iGreen’s mission is to empower Indeedians to create a sustainable future in an effort to make every Indeedian an advocate for a greener future, supporting Indeed to be a leader in Sustainability.

The EBRG embeds a culture of sustainability at Indeed by harnessing the talents and passion of Indeedians to help us strengthen Indeed’s environmental performance and integrate it across functions, with our products, and with Job Seekers and Employers. They educate, engage, generate ideas, and amplify the efforts needed to tackle climate change.

Green Engineering
Guild

The Green Engineering Guild is an employee-led EBRG. The group is focused on creating a trusted ecosystem of standards, tooling, and best practices for building green software and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our use of information and communications technologies (ICT).

Through this guild, we hope to leverage our employees’ passion for the environment to help us grow the business in a way that promotes sustainability.

Since joining the Green Software Foundation in 2023, the Green Engineering Guild has taken an active role in contributing to the broader engineering community, reinforcing our dedication to environmental sustainability in the tech industry.

My vision is for Indeed to be leaders in environmental sustainability in how we operate (carbon neutral on our way to net zero), how we build our products (green software engineering) and in what we offer job seekers (green product claims).
