Environmental consulting review
Wildlife Biologist (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 29 May 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedPretty typical for consulting. Overworked and underpaid. Like pretty much anywhere else, your coworkers are great but that is one of the only redeeming factors. There have been multiple acquirements of other consulting companies over the last couple years so multiple mergers has bogged a lot of day-to-day processes down and created a lot of contract issues. Also trying to eliminate full remote work.. I will say that the types of projects here compared to other companies are much more interesting and as far a field work goes there's a lot more variety.
Pros
Interesting projects, good coworkers.
Cons
Poor benefit package, low pay, poor work-life balance

Do Not Work Here
Worst work experience of my professional career. Senior management doesn't have the faintest idea about what is actually going on and they don't want to know. The staff is in constant fear of being let go. Weekly layoffs affect moral.

Collaborative workplace with opportunities to transfer to new departments and positions
Municipal Coop Student (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 19 January 2020
Spacious cubicles with good quality computers, monitors, and cabinets. Polite and informative staff, who are able to assist with must inquiries. Occasional "Lunch & Learns" to hear about new or existing legislation, technologies, or products.

Lacks ability to retain staff
Civil Engineering Technologist (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 17 September 2019
Started my career with Focus, which was a fantastic place to work.
As others have mentioned, culture, environment and especially recognition declined with the acquisitions by WSP.
There are still some quality people working here, but WSP will most certainly be hard pressed to retain them without a major culture shift.

WSP was amazing until the MMM collaboration
Landscape Technician (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 1 November 2017
WSP and formerly Focus were absolutely amazing, with a family friendly environment and amazing staff!
Once the MMM buyout happened, MMM management took over each department and each department suffered.
The MMM management slowly weeded out those from WSP and Focus that have not left on their own. Most of the highly qualified and highly praised WSP / Focus employees are now gone, hence WSP is trying to rebuild a declining reputation.
Much of the MMM management is dishonest and only look after themselves and the bottom line (something that was never evident in WSP / Focus) without any regard for the people below - the ones that create profit.
It is now a very gloomy and unpredictable environment with most staff (even MMM staff) wondering when their last day will be.
Good luck to all new employees! Hopefully your experience will be great!
Pros
Good location, former Focus/original WSP staff is amazing!!
Cons
Dishonest upper management from MMM side

Disengaged culture
Engineer (Current Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 31 July 2017
WSP in Canada is mess of companies that were brought together through a large number of acquisitions over the past 15 years. As a result, the culture is very dissected and disengaged.

unethical and unprofessional
Manager (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 12 February 2017
Leaders are often under qualified and make poor business decisions. Decisions are made to cut corners and costs to compensate for poor business decisions made at the top level. Inefficiency and bureaucracy make it an unsound long term business model. Manipulating multipliers by undercutting competition is one of the most recent acquisition's (MMM) business methodology, which in my opinion undervalues the industry as a whole, and makes it highly unethical. What will the shareholders have to say about this business model? Unproven engineering consulting mergers at this scale make WSP a perfect business case study for kids coming out of schools today, for what not to do. And there is no room to share about what this philosophy does to the employee satisfaction and work environment. Do yourself professional diligence and pass on this employer.
Pros
There are some capable staff on the lower levels.
Cons
crumbling office space, unable management, poor work environment, unsustainable business model, shameful ethics, and so on...

It was a positive and fun environment that included team building activities like office mini-golf, air hockey, pingpong, popcorn
Quality Assurance Quality Control / Draftsman (Former Employee) - Edmonton, AB - 13 January 2016
Depends on the department, in my case was the QAQC for construction. A typical day of work included calculations of piles, foundations, pedestals, drafting topographic surface, prepared underground scan reports, and various other reports, volume calculations. I learned to use many AutoCAD tools, and improved my knowledge of MS Office, and the various processes of plant site constructions.
The upper level management at WSP are top notch professional people.
The department management is a different story.
My co-workers were just like any other job places...you have all sorts from the brown-nosers, fakes, manipulative, whiny, self-serving, self-promoting, to ambitious young and eager to learn.
The hardest part of the job for me was having to deal with the politics.
The most enjoyable part of the job is the drafting where you just work on the one particular project until it's complete.
Pros
The pay was good including benefits
Cons
If the long hours don't kill you, the office politics will
