Some great people benefits are nil but you don’t pay for them some offices have a toxic culture
Health Care Aide (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 12 March 2022
Worked for the company just shy of 5 years. Started off great won’t get full time unless your there for a while or unless u snag an area no one wants. Lots of phone calls even if your off the clock they call and ur expected to answer. Lots of politics and toxicity in some of the offices you’ll notice the higher turnover rates. Lack of staffing so they’ll jam more people into your schedule. Overall it’s not bad if you like driving around all day and being on the phone clients can be quite challenging with not a lot of back up from upper management when you have an abusive one
Pros
Stability and freedom, unions decent and good out in the field workers
Cons
Takes a while to move up and work culture can be toxic, benefits suck

Overworked and Underpaid
Health Care Aide (Current Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 27 November 2021
Poor Management, they really don’t have a clue what the staff deal with and don’t care about the clients. Their priorities are the little things you don’t do rather than the good you DO. Working 7-9 hrs and only getting paid for 5-7….no premiums for working evenings and lousy benefits !!!
Pros
None really…..private sector is better
Cons
Everything …..but helping clients is most rewarding

Health Care Aide (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 28 October 2021
It was great working there because they gave me my first job opportunity when I came to this country. To that effect i owe the company a debt of gratitude for the great opportunities I had while working there. I was able to develop good friendly interpersonal relationships with others from various culture and background.

Challenging and rewarding workplace
HEALTH CARE AIDE (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 31 May 2020

Awesome place to work for.
Health Care Aide/Homecare Attendant (Current Employee) - St. Boniface, MB - 26 February 2020
I have worked here for 28 & 1/2 years and it has been an honour to work for them. I have grown, I have worked with all different nationalities and it has honed my skills at communicating. I have been repeatedly told by clients that I am patient, gentle and kind. WRHA offers courses in communication, palliative care, cooking for special diets and offer refresher courses. I am however ready for change

Jobs at Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
Health Care Aide positionsEnjoyable conversations with people
Health Care Aide/Home Care Attendant (Current Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 20 October 2017
Arriving at a clients home to provide care that they ned to stay in their home. Interacting with them and possible family members. Needing to be friendly and compastionate. Good customer Srvice skills is an asset. The worst part of the job is finding a client has died and you having to take care of that. Also because you are working alone and depending how long you have been working with that client it makes their death very hard on you emotionally.
Pros
Friendly Atmosphere
Cons
Having a client die

Most of the time it's ok
Health Care Aide (Current Employee) - Winnipeg Manitoba - 7 September 2017
It's an ok place to work. I feel management does not listen to their employees. I've seen so much change over the past 20 years and not all good. We no longer have a choice of going into blocks that are unsafe and have a history of violent incidents. I think maybe it's time to look for a different job. The future of homecare is so uncertain as well!!
Pros
Decent hourly wage
Cons
No choice in being sent to unsafe clients

healcth care aide/Homesupport worker
Health Care Aide (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 23 August 2017
cook meals for clients and clean the home and support my clients in bathing and other daily living tasks. Hardest part of the job was not having enough time to do my job or getting rescheduled or called in on a day off and expected to work lots of shift work on top of getting extra hours added to our days
Pros
good training for advancement
Cons
crazy hours shift work

excellent work environment and good workplace
Health Care Aide (Current Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 27 April 2017
Typical day start with an early morning providing residents with activities of daily living such as grooming and feeding. I have learned to manage my time effectively and efficiently. Hardest part of the job is when the family is trying to make you do duties that are out of my scope of practice
Pros
work independently

Health Care Aide in Home Care
Health Care Aide (Current Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 28 January 2017
A typical day of work would be driving to a first client's home and completing the tasks requested of me on my schedule in the time given. The driving time is included in the task time. This makes caring for the client and their needs very difficult without rushing them. Then it's off to the next client and their specific needs.
As a Health care provider I need to report different things that occur during my day and are given a number to call which is our scheduling unit. They are not very available to us. We always are put on hold. This makes us very frustrated and possibly late or very likely inaccurate with the information as the time passes.
Some clients either cancel or become ill and go into hospital or pass away. In those cases they fill those spots with other clients or patients from another Health Care Aides schedule who has called in sick or are on holidays. This makes it difficult for clients to trust and become comfortable with new workers.
Overall I do what I do because I love helping people who need assistance. It's selfishly rewarding to me!
Pros
helping people
Cons
crazy scheduling and management

Very multicultural and generous
Health Care Aide (Nursing Assistant) (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 5 December 2015
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority offers health services for family in needs.
One example I worked for was Home Care, I would travel from house to house taking care of patients, elderly, who aren't able to take care of themselves, and would have no one there to look out for them for the time being.
Winnipeg Regional Health Authority doesn't discriminate on the type of client that is asking for help. It meets the clients needs and necessities, such as if the client was not very fluent in english, they would offer a worker who is fluent to speak in their language. WRHA doesn't discriminate against sexuality as well, but if the client perfers to have someone with the same gender, WHRA is more than willing to offer a worker for them.
Pros
Health Benifits
Cons
Some positions require a lot of gas usage

Everchanging, Vibrant, REWARDING
Health Care Aide (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 24 November 2014
I was excited and enthusiastic about going to work everyday! A team of Health Care Professionals really DO make A big difference in the World. I love working alone or on a Team!
Work for the WRHA!! We're AWESOME when we come together!!
A typical days starts off with a relaxing morning coffee, for me, as we come together for our Team Meeting and then our 'physical'work begins. I was responsible for (fully)assisting 7 people up and out of bed to be ready for breakfast. I learned time management and that people are much more 'diversified'than one may actually realize. A position for a HCW requires a tremendous amount of selflessness and confidence.
The part of myjob in this World, as a Health Care Worker is most rewarding to me every minute of every day that I DO make HUGE differences in peoples lives and that (they) maintain THEIR quality of life because I am willing to help.
Pros
Variety of life
Cons
not enough hours available unless you get ft

Travelling from home to home meant being outdoors.
Health Care Aide (Former Employee) - Winnipeg - 29 April 2014
Travelling to and from clients homes to care for and help them care for themselves in a tailored home setting. Meeting new people and learning about them was a great part of my job. Hardest part of the job has got to be a death of a person. Most satisfying, is knowing I have done all I could to improve a person's quality of life.
Pros
Freedom and flexibility.
Cons
Stressfull and often challenging environment.
