The first manager was good at his job, the following two were not good at their jobs. The pay was ok, for Winnipeg, benefits cost the employee about $250/month. The blue collar folks and the sales were decent people.

Very stressful place to work, constantly micro-managed.
Has a tendency to over-hire and lay off. no actual training, just videos to watch.. the shop is union, and the manager is a control freak, leading to the manager asserting his presents any way he can.
Pros
Good wage

When I worked a Varsteel it was a good place to work. They management were friendly and helpful. The branch manager and assistant branch manager took care of there employees. The hardest part of this job is lifting and pulling steel product to assemble customers orders.
Pros
worked regular hours

Location's top management MIA.
Major health & safety violations in all areas.

Management bullies & favors foreign visiting workers to work beyond collective agreement.

Truck drivers illegally replaced by outside contract company.

Workers sent home while idle office staff & absent management remain collecting salaries.

Yard overworked unsafely on all shifts.

Cranes constantly down & unsafe.

This was my first class 1 driving position and it is an excellent place to learn. While deadlines are important, safety is more important. There is always someone available to help make your deliveries safer. The major issue is how most deliveries are loaded in the first place, it takes time and consideration on behalf of an experienced watchful driver to make the loads deliverable. Training is lack luster at best. Always take your time and make sure your load is safe.
Pros
good mix of home life and work
Cons
training program is non existant
