Do not work on ortho/trauma

Indeed featured review

It is so mismanaged on T7 and management is extremely toxic and unsupportive. The patients are acute but that is pretty much the same everywhere. The manager often discredits your feelings and make you feel bad about yourself. do not work here if you can avoid it.

Management

VCH in principle takes care of their employees and have been a fairly good organization. My transfer to RH has been less than stellar with a non-experienced manager. Unfortunately, a poor manager leads very little room for an employee. Vancouver Coastal Health tries to have a people first culture, but due to stress for management, many managers fail employees.

Very happy to be working for VCH

I highly recommend VCH. They are very supportive for new hired employees. The culture is very welcoming and there's always room for growth and opportunities.

Inexperienced management that create a disrespectful culture

Leads/Managers/Directors are inexperienced and promoted into positions without possessing the education or knowledge of managing teams and people. Instead they focus only on how fast staff can produce without regard for quality and accuracy. There is a systemic problem that stems with the management that creates a culture of fear, intimidation and disrespect. Staff is not valued, hence the reason everyone working in Decision Support are temporary employees and always refused the opportunity to become a permanent employee. If VCH valued its employees, indefinite temporary employees would be allowed to move into permanent roles after 2 or 3 years. Unfortunately, there are many temporary employees working 4, 5 and 6 years without any hopes of becoming a permanent employee.

Fast Paced

Great benefits & pay, but you pay for it with your mental health. So many burned out staff; unable to give quality care with the workload, but still is expected of us. Stressful environment, managers not supportive, very punitive. To succeed, you need to be highly organized, super efficient, really caring, assertive, able to handle high degree of stress, high cognitive function

Fast paced and collaborative

VCH has changed over the years I was employed there. Many opportunities for learning are there for staff. Management varied but, for most part was open and collaborative.

Requires individuals who are willing to put in the effort.

It's hard to get your initial job with VCH, but once you do, there is lots of room to grow and for internal transfers so that you can find a job that is the best fit for your interests and skill set. Unfortunately, job security can be double edged in that some of your co-workers and manager may be out paced by their current role and responsibilities, and are not meeting the challenge as well as some others might. It's unfortunate that despite the innovation that occurs, many of my coworkers are burnt out and jaded working for the health authority, but the money and benefits are good so they are reluctant to give up their position.

Minimal opportunities for pay advancement

Union job so difficult for the organization to get rid of challenging individuals who do not fulfil there responsibilities. For hardworking individuals this is very frustrating

Good place to work. Heavy workload!

Wonderful team, lots of support. Workload can become extremely heavy ...as with all health authorities so not unique to VCH Lots of opportunities to trial other areas or programs Great benefits and vacation. Salary doesn’t keep up with cost of living in Vancouver!

Great job that serves the older adult population

Run scheduled programs to meet the needs of the older adult members. Wait for member to arrive at Adult Day Program and at the end of the day wait for each members to leave centre. Hardest part of the job is having patience. The most enjoyable part is the staff

public sector healthcare

fairly similar to the other health authorities but with the interesting differences around serving very high-need, marginalized populations including mental health and substance use cohorts.

Good workplace

Vancouver Coastal Health is a great place to work. However, it is an older demographic working there. The culture is great, lots of fun people, but is a slower environment.

Stressful environment where managment only says negative things

Staffing Clerk Position is a very stressful job. In a small town where there is not enough nursing staff from careaids, LPNs, to RNs...its always the same people doing overtime and staff are burnt out. You need to know many different unions and who you can pull to cover a shift sometimes spending hours filling one shift and pulling 5 staff from other areas in order to cover just one shift. Powell River is overseen by Vanouver North Shore managment and they never say anything unless its negative. If a mistake is made and there is a grievance it comes out of staffings budget so again you will be reprimanded. There is major drama and backstabbing in such a small department....so BEWARE! The pay is great....but managment from Vancouver also thought it was a great idea to change rotations with 2 weeks notice so the full time positions work 5 months of weekends in their rotations and then 2 weeks of one day of weekend in rotation followed by 5 weekend off in a row...so cant have much of a life. If your relief does not come in (which also happens often there) you are stuck and have no choice but to stay.

Pros

Pay is good

Cons

Stressful, backstabbing staff, bad mangager from Van, 5 months of weekends in a row in rotation
