Productive and Fun Work Environment

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Workers are extremely friendly and helpful, and the management is very understanding. Work duties include Picking/Packing/loading and unloading Trailers. Hardest part of the job is having to lift heavy items for a number of hours, however, the management and other associates make sure everyone is safe and not doing anything they are uncomfortable with.

Pros

steel toe boots after 3 months, occasionally free food

Cons

Long hour, Lifting heavy items, Low pay.

Unstable Unprofessional Scary

Unsupportive management who plays favorites. Very clicky environment and if your not part of the “click” your on the outs. A tad cultish…flow chain is a pass the buck mentality with the customer being the victim in the end. Product flow during the pandemic was very bad like all businesses but the company wasn’t upfront with customers creating a lot of complaints at retail.

Pros

Some decent deals to be had

Cons

Upper management terrible, clicks, zero support

Stressful Hard Labour No Benefits Revolving Door

Hard labour, stressful, unorganized, heavy lifting at all times, dirty warehouse, lowly management, revolving door, job only to bandaid your bills....

Pros

None

Cons

Hard labour, stressful, revolving door, NO breaks.

Competitive environment

I think I would’ve liked the job more if it wasn’t Commission based. Although you did get an hourly pay under minimum wage most of your income came from sales. This caused a lot of competitiveness, as well as friction between the sales associates. It eventually lead to fairly unhealthy work environment.

Stressful environment and full of drama

Terrible culture from all angles. Employees that are full of rage because they are not paid properly and the expectations are too high. Associates are aggressive on the floor because they work on commission -this is the only way they can increase their paycheque. This company likes to micromanage his people.

Pros

Discount

Cons

Poor pay and high expectations

Fun Work Place

It is a fun place to work. The staff members are cooperative and team work is absolutely essential. You will get trained. Good for entry level job seekers as the pay is minimal.

Pros

40% discount, steel toe boots after 3 months, good benefits

Cons

Less pay

Great for career growth and advancement

I spent a short time at Urban Barn but it was well worth it. They train you exceptionally well on all tasks and give you background knowledge of the products. Customers are generally nice and polite and will respond positively to sales associates. The work culture was very friendly and the staff are very encouraging. An added perk was that you also get commission so they want you to succeed!

Loved the people I worked with and like helping customers find items for their homes

Beautiful products to decorate homes, excellent online training modules, supportive manager. Very strong sales support and modelling to learn from. Never left alone until I was comfortable. I enjoyed going to work there every day.

Pros

Opening and displaying new products when they arrived. Buying items with my discount!

Cons

Tiring being on my feet for my shift sometimes.

Awful Mean Girl Atmosphere

Work here if you want to feel like you're back in highschool! What a horrid bunch of mean girls who think the absolute most of their miserable selves. I didn't work with either reviewer below but it seems this location stays true to themselves in terms of treating employees like trash. You can exceed your goals each week and instead of congratulating you for exceeding, the girls will make you feel as if you MUST have stolen their sales to do so. There is no winning here. If you want to dread every day of your work life, apply here. If you value your sanity and value your self esteem, stay far away. Even if there were pros, they would not outweigh the cons. Shut this location down and start over with entirely new staff.

Pros

Nothing At All

Cons

Quite Literally Everything

Great Head Office Team- poor store management with zero morale and support for personal growth

The manager that hired me was amazing but she left shortly after to follow another career path. After she left, the work environment at that particular location showed its true colors. The assistant manager was extremely rude and unhelpful and was also very cliquey. If he didn’t like you he made sure to make you feel uncomfortable and to give you the worst schedule.

Pros

Coworkers, head office, networking experience.

Cons

Overly competitive commission, lack of proper management skills

Terribly managed

Awfully managed warehouse and the lead hand is a complete joke of a human being, do not recommend this place unless it is LAST resort as they hire literally anyone.

Good entry level job for student

Good job for a student interested in sales and home decor/ design. Made good coworker relationships. Must like selling or you won't make money. I wouldn't recommend as a long term position.

Pros

Good discount

Cons

It's retail so can be slow and boring, not great pay

Fun Place to Work, but never get promoted

Urban Barn is a fun place to work, as long as you have great people to work with. Upper Management and contacts can be difficult to deal with, but overall easy to interact with. High expectations for an entry-level retail job, and very competitive as you work partly on commission. The commission is not high enough for the level of competition expected. Limited room for growth and company will often hire managers from outside the company, making it difficult to grow within the company. High Turnover Rate. Products are not worth the price tag.

Pros

Fun Environment, Good Selling/Sales Experience

Cons

Commission, Competitive, Petty, No Room For Growth

alright place

very unorthodox and unorganized place to work and some employees are lazy and management does nothing about it and not everyone is treated the same there.

Former assistant manager laval

The manager hired to work in this new location had NO Experience but she was a previous designer. She was extremely blatant on who she liked best, and as i trained at the Dorian store, another nut was manager there. Run for your life..

Cons

Everything

Stay Away

Poor management. Dishonest and use ppl. There's no job security there. Every month they let at least one person go if not more. The business is sinking so don't expect them to keep you for a long time.

Pros

Nothing

Cons

Every thing

Competitive place to work.

Management ran store with a 'do as I say not as I do' attitude and frequently spoke rudely to employees. Many just wanted to quit from feeling so incompetent. Clique attitude from some staff while others would appear happy but then stab coworkers in the back when out of earshot. Overall a toxic environment where those who were best at stealing sales were rewarded.

Pros

Flexible working hours

Cons

Competitive atmosphere and poor management

fun place to work but competitive

its a fun place to work of you like the team you work with. its great helping customers design their homes and actually pretty cool to be on the journey with them. BUT its competitive; any job where commission plays a factor. often you help someone for hrs and then the go to another store or to another associate on the date of purchase and that commission is no longer yours. UB allows you to take notes and build your clientele, but its always stressful to have to get your commission if you dont have the paper trail to back it up. so holding yourself accountable is so important at this job, but other than that, ive really enjoyed working at urban barn. do wish the pay or commission % was higher.

Pros

discount

Cons

8hr, only 30 break. commission is removed from your next cheque if someone returns something
