Upwork is a great place to get gigs but their fees are high
I have worked on the Upwork platform for the past nine years. I have been really happy with the work I have received. There is an endless supply of work available and they shifted their platform so clients who aren't serious will quickly be flagged. How much the clients pay isn't much to do with Upwork and what you'll find is there is a high percentage of clients who are looking for cheap writers. There are some big clients that pay normal wages as well. I am a top performer on Upwork so I don't have to pay as much as some but there are some contracts where I pay 20% of my earnings to Upwork plus $1 to withdraw funds. If I had to buy credits to apply for jobs, that would cost even more. Upwork used to charge a 10% fee and they've changed their format a few times. Where I once had five stars, I was then demoted to a percentage system that slowed down my client base for awhile.

Productive and fun though
It's fun working here, just that the hourly pay need to be looked into and politics has to stop. There should be flexibility to move from one technology to another without sentiments. Also, freelancers complaints has to be looked into with utmost emergency and not be abandoned.

Very competitive
As an online platform for freelancers, it is very competitive and needs you to update over time to survive in the field. I've been studying and always be updated to cope with the flow of the different business perspective and needs.
