Long hour, work overload

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Too much work. Not enough staff. No overtime pay. Colleagues are supportive but the management is the issue. The system of how incoming work is handled is always the issue.

A Management that operates with heavy hand

TSSA used to be good 15 years ago may be, but in last 10 years has gone down hill. The management is very selfish and they do not treat you with respect. The culture is very poisonous here. Should you try to raise a concern about an issue, you are told, you are free to find another job even though you have been there for 20 years. It is impossible to reach the maximum level of salary unless you are relative or friend of your manager. No overtime pay and you are overloaded with work.

Management do not care

If you are an inspector looking to join here please stay away. They do not give you any direction. You are expected to be on call 24/7 without pay. No room for advancement. There are inspectors here who joined 25 years ago and are still inspectors and have not even reached the peak salary level for inspector. When you present a problem to management you are left unheard. They keep spending millions on computer programs that do not work.

You are nothing but a money collector

The name of the company is confusing. Technical and Safety should be removed from the name and replaced with Heavy Handed and Fly by the Seat of Your Pants. And the word Authority should be changed to Hourly Rate. Inspectors are poorly trained and most have less than 2 years experience in industry. This company does not promote gender equality in the workplace and management changes frequently. The privatization of the MCCR Technical Standards Division was the big mistake that created this dogs breakfast.

Pros

company car

Cons

unsafe working conditions

Nice place to work

I left TSSA just before they made some major restructuring changes. During that time, it was really great. My manager was supportive and clear, my co-workers were nice; even the co-op students were fun! The other workers were really nice too. The office had a sense of calm yet busyness. There was a lot of work to be done and deadlines to be met, but I did not feel stressed or under pressure as it was realistic and achievable.I really liked the feel of both friendliness and corporate setting. It is a strange mix but it works.

Pros

Nice team, good workload, supportive manager

Cons

Pay could be better

Average organization

Organization says it wants to progress, the actions do not display that. Lack of taking employees feedback. Poor communication. Leadership tends to micro manage, asks questions without momentum to move things forward. Unorganized and chaotic.

Management doesn't know anything

Worst HR dept I've ever experienced! Even employees looked miserable. The hire people for management who have no idea what TSSA is about. They treat staff with little or no respect.

You get a little badge

You get a little badge to carry everyday while you are out there sticking your neck out for nothing. Do a great job for 5 years and it is blown away by a complaint from one of the directors manufacturing buddies,Stay in private industry - the pay is better and you won;t be stuck in limbo working for a non- government entity that claims to be a not-for profit. Chuckle.

Good place to work

A good workplace to learn about risk-based best practice research and methodologies and applications of risk management. Innovative thinking and a collaborative approach to addressing issues is encouraged.

Great Company

A great company to work for. Small but a great community with a strong executive team. Location is not the best, but it is easy to get to and close to the highway.

Exciting and welcoming

Employees are helpful and all enjoy the work environment. The culture is warm and welcoming with all teams working as a unit. There are various social events throughout the year.

A real cluster

This so called "not for profit' agency is out of control. They have lost sight of why they were formed in 1997. It was supposed to be a "cheaper" more in touch way of delivering inspection services to the public. The only groups that have benefited are the trade unions. TSSA managers show no shame in doling out there likes of companies on their facebook page. How is that not a conflict of interest. ? The reality is they are all planning their next career move and using their position to provide favours to the manufacturing sector and pave the way for their next move. Where is the oversight of this high turnaround, mismanaged dogs breakfast

Pros

it;s a job

Cons

working with inexperienced inspectors and managers

Good people but no direction

No clear direction from MGMT. No one can explain what they want and everyone does what they want so you constantly redo the same work forever hoping it's what someone wants. For technical resources, this is a difficult job since no one knows what you do but will try to estimate your time for you and undervalue your efforts. Constant turnover means anyone can disappear tomorrow. Everyone is use to that so no one expects you to stay. Underpays for technical people

Pros

Good people that mean well

Cons

No direction, lots of turnover, lots of rework, underpays

Extremely unprofessional company

This company has no idea of their objectives. Theres no good direction. Management is really bad. Nepotism is at highest degree. Everyone keeps getting fired. Management make fake promises to get work done.

Pros

Good benefits

Cons

Poor management

Privatization gone rabid

I worked for the TSSA for one year just after the privatization from the Technical Standards Division of the MCCR. I had previously worked for the MCCR (Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations) for 9 years. The TSSA was formed as a result of the Harris governments desire to break OPSEU, lower wages, rob people of seniority and bully employees in the absence of a union. Once the union was gone, the managers showed their true colours The TSSA is nothing more than a cash grab that should have been brought back in to government during the McGuinty years - but he was all talk. They (TSSA) preach public safety but the reality is that they are really a FOR profit "organization" that has a bunch of overpaid directors from the private sector telling them what should be done to line their nests. Who really owns the TSSA ?? I know whose pocket they are in - UA

Pros

Company car

Cons

inept management, back stabbing, double standards

Poor management and glass ceiling

I worked there for several years! Co workers are incredible and the employee culture is great. Management has not a clue what they are doing. They spend their entire day in their offices gossiping about everyone ( i know this, as i have sat through it) Specifically, in the Intake/customer service area. The manager/supervisor there, has her favourites and if you are not one of them, she will go to the moon and back to make your life miserable....forcing you out! I quit and numerous others quit because of her!!! The pay is ok, but not worth the misery and poor treatment. Side note: you will ONLY move UP if you have family there or are a favourite ! Not ever because of your work ethic or overall performance. Oh and you must be dead to take a sick day!!!

Pros

Wonderful co workers

Cons

Poor Management, no work life balance, no room for fair advancement

Overworked-Underpaid

The workload is not balanced properly due to major lack of management knowledge of what goes on in their own area. Good employees are punished with more work, lazy workers get special accomodations. Don't waste your time.

Pros

None

Cons

No room for advancement, poor management

swamp you with work with no overtime pay

pro: they will spend the money to train you salary is good stable job con: work is non stop no overtime pay lots of expectations although no directly asked impossible work load, bring work home all the time in attempt to meet deadlines but new work keeps coming to your desk, no one cares no work life balance, work will overtake your personal time expect to go on vacation as punishment when you come back to see piles of work waiting for you

Pros

sometimes free lunches

Cons

long hours, no overtime pay

Great Place to Work

Good place to work, great coworkers and supervisor. Although not much chance to move "upwards" there is lots of opportunity to move around. Being a contract position, I did not have an opinion on management.

Horrendous Senior management

Welcoming colleagues and middle management. However, this company is ran by senior abusive "employees" whom do not know what leadership is and only care about their bonuses or power. Direction, decision-making, transparency, respect and leadership are lacking and do not expect HR to help, it is inexistent or unqualified. Turn over rate in the office is high (and the biggest is in HR)!

Pros

staff and middle management

Cons

Senior Management
