Since 1957, the Town of Fairview has supplied municipal treated water injected with fluoride. As per Alberta Environment regulations, the Town maintains fluoride levels that are between 0.6 ppm and 1.0 ppm. Testing is done once per day to ensure that the Town is within these prescribed levels. Fluoride injection costs the Town approximately $4,000.00 per year, NOT including significant labour hours/costs.
Fluoride is a difficult chemical to handle. Water Plant Operators who are required to manage fluoride are required to wear head to toe personal protective equipment.
As part of Phase III of the water plant upgrade, $15,000.00 has been spent on upgrading the facility to better control proper dispersion of fluoride into water. – less
