Not bad for a first job or while going to school.
Clerk (Former Employee) - Quadra - 15 June 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThe job can be stressful depending on which store you work at but if you get a slow store expect very little work and boring shifts. The job itself is whatever but if you can get good managers like I did then you are set in terms of scheduling and time off.

Consistent employment but under compensated and suffering from muddled communication
Grocery Supervisor (Current Employee) - Victoria, BC - 3 June 2022
Its a busy place, you will be appreciated if you put in your all but appreciation doesn't pay the bills so if you need a living wage or are trying to support a family or have debt or bills find something else. Wage increases are slow and small and you have to advance to move past the wage caps. Management varies from department to department and from location to location. There are positions available to be had but guard yourself if you aren't strong with your boundaries

Deli clerk (Former Employee) - Victoria - 24 May 2022
All depends on who you work with & for but either way dont expect fair pay for the hard work you do & always expect the slackers & people that do less to get the better pay... Not a fair work environment starting pay is between $16-18 if your pretty you can get more than $16 right off the bat
Pros
None
Cons
The alcoholics will some how make more than you

A fun, underpaid, high skill required position
Head decorator (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 6 April 2022
Cake decorating comes with high expectations, low pay, and an enormous workload. There are never enough cake decorators on staff to get the work done because the position is not given the same value that others are. The job causes an incredible amount of musculoskeletal injuries because of the huge amount of repetitive tasks that must be completed.
Pros
Benefits, some engaging and creative work
Cons
Long hours, large workload, low pay, little recognition

It’s easy
Seafood Manager (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 22 March 2022
If you’re not a manager they pay everyone very poorly and almost never get weekends off. They don’t care about you at all you are replaceable. The cap on pay hasn’t really moved up in twenty years!

Not a bad place to start working when your a kid
Produce Clerk (Former Employee) - Royal Oak, BC - 14 February 2022
Entry level fairly relaxed job. Just have a voice or you tend to get walked over a little bit when it comes to what your doing and scheduling and such.
Pros
Pretty flexible
Cons
Some people take it way to seriously

Toxic Store Culture
Department Manager (Current Employee) - British Columbia - 6 February 2022
Management is toxic, store culture is absolutely terrible. There is no accountability for management— only lower level employees. Unlikely that any HR concern is actually heard, they are too understaffed and they don’t particularly care anyways.
Pros
Medical/dental benefits, unlimited sick days
Cons
high turn over, low and/or unequal pay even when conducting the same function.

Great Flexibility and Manafement
Cashier (Former Employee) - Surrey, BC - 25 January 2022
As a high school student who requires a part-time job the management understood I could only work limited hours. They are understanding as long as you communicate well with them. Overall good job.
Pros
flexible hours, easy work
Cons
overwhelmed at times if store is busy

Good job for beginners who are looking for entry level experience. Productive, fast paced and skill building
Cashier/Customer Service (Current Employee) - British Columbia - 2 January 2022
It is a great entry level, first job but i wouldn’t recommend it for long term as the wage isn’t very livable and there is no room to broaden your horizon or grow your skills past training, which makes it very repetitive and boring. I found my location had a lot of favouritism between the supervisors and cashiers/other positions. they would set different standards and be more strict with the workers they weren’t friends with which made you feel left out and not welcomed as much as others. That is dependent on the people you work with and not thriftys itself though, just my experience.
Pros
flexible hours and very understanding towards students/athletes.
Cons
low paying boring.

Fun place to work but company doesn't care about employees
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) - British Columbia - 24 November 2021
Just another big company that doesn't care about how their employee's are treated as long as their bottom line looks good! They don't promote from within in attempts to save money by offering outside candidates a lower wage, resulting in terrible management and existing staff stressfully having to train their manager and pick up the slack. Little to no communication from head office. Expect 2-3 day waits minimum on anything you ask or need to know regardless of how important it is. Often put staff in dangerous positions of working in a high theft LIQUOR STORE ALONE...sometimes of which its a female worker.
Pros
Learn about booze
Cons
Labor intensive, bad pay, bad management, bad corporate office, terrible management, no raises, no discount

Thrifty Foods has been a great place to work at. If you need time off or medical appointments they are very understanding and will work with you. The staff are amazing and friendly and also willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Working here you get benefits part time or full time and raises plus bonuses. Honestly its been one of the best places I have worked at.
Pros
Friendly staff, great wages, benefits, bonuses and a stress free enviroment.

Busy work environment, good coworkers
Grocery Clerk (Former Employee) - Victoria, BC - 26 July 2021
Busy work environment (especially during holidays), very difficult or almost impossible to request more than 2 days off in a row, let alone on weekends. Coworkers were nice. Very flexible for students, but again, expect to work weekends. Average pay Free food quite often in the break room
Pros
Free food, flexible hours
Cons
No weekends off, busy work environment

Cons

Good
Deli Clerk (Former Employee) - Colwood, BC - 10 July 2021
It's a generally good job, minimum wage pay and friendly managers. A few employees who think they're your boss and nobody cleans after themselves. But if you want flexibility it works
Pros
Not many
Cons
Gets boring

Work related politics
Job Captain (Former Employee) - View Royal, BC - 19 June 2021
There are managers who take smoking breaks and just chillout at work while making the others work a lot. I do not recommend this workplace, they are simply exploiting people.
Pros
Not at all
Cons
Low wages

Epic
Grocery Clerk (Former Employee) - Courtenay, BC - 13 June 2021
If you love being micro managed by a chain smoking manager who takes 2+ hour long breaks and then comes back and ridicules you for talking to a co-worker while you have LITERALLY nothing left to do, you'll love Thrifty Foods!
Pros
Friendly Peers, Good Supervisors, Flexible Hours
Cons
Some managers think it's Vietnam, and treat you accordingly

Good for students or as a side job
Produce service clerk (Part-time) (Former Employee) - Salt Spring Island, BC - 28 April 2021
Great staff morale, very inclusive environment, supportive teammates, reasonable expectations, good job security, however there's a lot of corporate policy in place that can make the job difficult if your mind doesn't work that way. It's also quite a slippery ladder to climb as far as pay and promotions and employee benefits are certainly nothing to write home about. Overall, it's a great job to have pre-career as a student or post-career if you've previously owned or managed a business.
Pros
Good people to work with
Cons
Insufficient pay and benefits

Good co-workers, unforgiving company
Cashier/Customer Service (Current Employee) - Victoria, BC - 5 September 2020
Sobeys is a company that doesn't care about it's employees. The employees themselves, however, are a joy to work with. The work is what you can expect from a minimum wage job, but the people there make the repetitive tasks and customer service bareable.
Pros
Amazing co-workers, fair scheduling
Cons
Hour cuts from Sobeys
