Management is very unorganized. A lot of the time the operator has to fend for themselves. lowest wages in the industry. job security is always in question.

Everyone was always scared for their jobs
Supervision (Former Employee) –  Cnrl30 December 2018
Worked at CNRL for a winter, new supt was great because he was from outside of Thompson Bros. PM had no respect for anyone at cnrl or Fort hills. They pushed out their best Supt. And it went down hill after that. If they pushed out that PM then all of Thompson bros. Could be a descent outfit. The head office wants a good outfit but put the trust entirely on the wrong man
Pros
Head office wants a good company
Cons
Head PM in the field destroys the company

Geriatric Equipment, Low Pay, Pay For Camp
Grader Operator (Former Employee) –  Fort McMurray, AB8 November 2018
Not a very well managed company. They don't pay competitively, overtime starts after 10 hours. The 14/7 shifts start on Wednesday, so you don't get 44 hours until Sunday. You pay to get there and back ( Suncor Oil Sands) . You ride a bus 45min and back to the mine on the roughest road in existence. You pay $35/day for a room in a mold infested trailer with paper thin walls, (you can hear every bodily function of your neighbors). The Camp Food is mediocre, with the odd great meal. They promise a $2/hr safety bonus which they find ways not to pay. They will either lay you off without notice, or write you up for frivolous infractions.
Pros
A few good operators and foremen.
Cons
You won't get ahead

Great company to work for
Equipment operator (Current Employee) –  Fort Hills, AB17 June 2018
Thompson Bros is a great company to work for with lots of work. A very tight crew that works great together and a very enjoyable environment to be in. Lots of work in the oilsands and have been working steady for a long time even through the bad weather. Camps are good and the company is very accommodating for time off when needed. The 14/7 12 hour days work schedule is great. The benefit package is good. As well as bonuses. And everyone is always willing to help others out. All around it is a great place to work with excellent safety program and family values.
Pros
Eveything
Cons
Can’t think of any at all.

Not very good
Equipment Operator (Former Employee) –  Ft. McMurray, AB24 August 2017
Very unorganized place for new hires, low pay, and no one to meet and greet and show you around when you first arive at there filthy dirty camp, that you are charged 30 dollars a day to stay in. You have to figure everything out on your own with very little guidance. Most of the employees were great guys, and some were just down right disrespectful to others trying to sleep after a long day at work, slamming doors, yelling in there rooms or in the hallways at 2 or 3am when they are drunk. If this sounds like the kind of place you like to spend 21 days a month, than this is definitely for you lol
Pros
Mostly decent employees, and heavy equipment to operate
Cons
Everything else

Heavy Equipment Operator (Former Employee) –  Fort McMurray, AB11 December 2016
Working with Thompson was okay, they are just seasonal and I am looking for something a bit more permanent. I also enjoyed their schedule of 14\7 but the foremans did a great job of instructing the task at hand and completing the job efficiently

Great place for experience and career advancement
Surveyor (Former Employee) –  Fort Mackay, AB12 March 2016
Overall the company treated me well. Alot of the management were fairly inexperienced which made things very difficult at times and caused alot of pointed fingers. Besides that the company is great. Supplying jobs to many people and often if the workers show interest in moving up and working on better equipment or want to advance to a new position, for example labourer to surveyor, or labourer to heavy equipment operator. The foremen provide the training needed for these workers to advance their skills and careers. Survey crew was exceptional with all of the flack that they received and continually worked hard daily and pushed themselves to get everything done.A surveyor at thompson brothers if educated and knowledgeable often share the job of foreman alongside the foreman, but also tackles all of the duties that he is required and needs to complete.
Pros
great advancement. Great people.
Cons
Lower pay than most. Poor management. majority of foremen are unknowledgeable or unexperienced.

Heavy Equipment Operator (Former Employee) –  Spruce Grove, AB3 September 2015
Ok to work for. Probably will be better when oil prices get better and the big companies release more money for projects. At least camp and flights where included so I didn't have to pay for that.

Heavy Equipment Operator (Former Employee) –  Lac La Biche, AB19 March 2015
- Lots of learning and training on equipment such as excavator, grader, rock truck
-Learned how to be confident and independent on the machines I was operating.
-My management team was great, they were very supportive and positive.
- I enjoyed the team of employees I worked with, they were all very close knit and had been working together for a while.
- The hardest part of my job was not letting my guard down. There are always going to be days where you are going to lose confidence, but you still keep moving forward.
- The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to overcome challenging experiences.
Pros
Lots of operating time
Cons
The economy falling
