Great place to be to help the community
The job is very rewarding in that you get to be the first contact for people needing help. You are a vital part of the team and are treated as such. The hardest part of the job is the multitasking you will have to do. You will leave everyday feeling if you made a difference in someone's life.
Pros

Great Mission but run like an army
Loved working here and getting to work with homeless population. One of the few shelters that takes in entire families and I always took great pride in getting to help so many people. I always came home so grateful for the things I had and it really helped me have a more grateful, kind, and empathetic disposition. However it is a very strict work environment and very micromanaged- if you are used to working in the army maybe it won't bother you. You cannot come in early or leave late, even if there is an emergency with residents or you get in trouble. They watch you on the cameras and make sure you arrive and leave when you say you do. Unfortunately the pay was terrible and I was not able to pay my bills on the salary or else I would have stayed.

An assigned work place by Experience Works
The daily work included: Assisting with helping clients receive benefits and supplies. Then I was in charge of processing the accrual of information for the enrichment program for the boys & girls after school program that was the the Salvation Army at the time. I also was a member of the disaster van team as well as the mobile food van that distributed food daily throughout the city to the homeless and indigent people. Working with the unfortunate and being able to help them was very rewarding. I felt very fulfilled when I went home after work.
Pros
Working with people who wanted the help others
Cons
The lack of appreciation by the "Majors"
