Fun work place in the beginning!

Indeed featured review

Booth has changed management so many times with so many different working styles, found it to be stressful, inconsistent, slave drivers, no work life balance.

Pros

Free lunches only during training sessions internally.

Cons

Management now very opinionated and don’t listen to staff for input regarding program.

Could use improvenent

For an organization with so many rules, processes, protocols and money ...they somehow lack in them. The overall experience was positive - leadership to clientelle alike - however, the organization has fallen behind where it should be growing in leaps and bounds.

Pros

An excellent platform from which to work if helping others is your forte

Cons

Things won't change if you don't change them

Did Christmas kettles. I was servicing a purpose.

Salvation Army is an excellent place to work both as a paid employee (Christmas kettles, they paying me helped me to make it through the Christmas holidays as I was struggling financially.) and as a volunteer in the North Shore playing the piano and serving food in the downtown eastside on the street and at Harbour Light as well.

Management not great

People in top tier, like Directors have been around for many years and have set biases and behaviour difficult to change. For some it is the only company they have worked for, ever. Their lack of drive has set the tone for the culture which is mostly frustrating for ambitious millennials and Gen X. It is not a company where you can grow or bring about change to processes or people behaviours. Either adapt to their slow, unproductive, incompetent and slacking-off, never changing culture or move.

Pros

From the outside, the grass looks greener

Cons

From the inside, it is rotten

Great place to work if you are new to the field and looking a pathway to other social services.

Upper management does not care about frontline workers. There is no union at this location and management does not like staff talking about union. If you do, you are scrutinize or given the cold shoulder. Also the staffing environment is very toxic. Some staff display discrimination towards others and do a lot of gossiping.

Pros

Connect with community members and residents we serve

Cons

Long hours, cheap wage

The extra mile people go even in very difficult times

Depending on appointment, visitations and office work. organizing prayer meetings. Planing for workers under you and making sure that the is good working relationship.Dealing with funerals, helping people who will have lost loved ones. losing members to death is so painful. I enjoy Platform ministry and doing community work.

Pros

Education for my children

Cons

Poor remuneration and at times not so good and honest situations and treatments.

Supportive, encouraging and caring environment

The most supportive, friendly environment I’ve ever had the opportunity to work in. From the majors to the Executive Director, the Salvation Army is full of knowledge, love and support for our community and our staff.

Poor management

They have bed bugs and the management do not care. They are there just to get their salary and do not solve any problems. If you don't agree with their decisions they will make sure to make your life miserable (so you quit or they will find something to fire you).

Pros

None

Cons

Shift work, bully management

They have an excellent Lunch Group.

I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at The Salvation Army Food Bank Warehouse. I would recommend it to my friends, which I have, and I would and WILL continue to work there. The Lunch Group is always nice and friendly, as the staff is friendly. Overall, the atmosphere is calm, great, and welcoming.

Pros

Friendly People

Cons

Not open on Saturdays.

Do not work here

Worst employer I have ever had. Pay is low, training and management is poor. People are divisive and cruel at times. Workers hardly care for those they serve while the people that do care are the officers charged with running locations. These people are elitist. There is a hierarchy that cannot be touched, as officers are above reproach. Only their supervisors can give them any guidance or correction and they are hardly ever in touch with these people. If you want to do good, there are plenty of better agencies that pay better and have a better structure.

Pros

helping those in need

Cons

long hours - expected volunteer hours, poor management, poor leadership, poor emphasis on workers and staff, divisive crew members and congregation. Fundamentally flawed in many ways

Poor pkace to work

While on the surface they appear to be genuine but in reality they are more concerned about money than people. While they claim to be a Christian organization the actions and attitude do not reflect that in any way. Placing non Christians in positions where they are having to pretend to have a faith is very troubling.

Meaningful, Interesting Work

My experience was mostly good. I loved working with the clients and for the most part enjoyed being part of a team of people aiming to help people who were in great need of help.

Pros

Good opportunity to utilize skills, creativity and spirituality

Cons

Better communication between various teams members and departments required

Very stressful but you meet a lot of interesting people.

Extremely high expectations for low wage. Time management an issue. No communication between management and staff. If you qualify, the benefits are good.

Layed back/responsible casual

Salvation Army is a great start off as a first job because of the multiple tasks you will be asked to do and or participate in. There is never a day when there is nothing to do because of the non stop shipments of donations. I am someone speaking from experience and loved it as one of my jobs. I would highly recommend this job to high school students because it looks great on your resume.

Poor workplace environment

Management is forever giving second chances to those not showing up for work or disregarding union rules. People always going off on stress leave. Turnover is high so no one gets to know each other. The population they serve have no consistency. Ask yourself why positions are always being posted... a good place to start, but not to stay.

Pros

You’ll never get fired

Cons

You’ll never have a social life or decent pay

Kettle campaign and volunteer

Is a pretty good filler between jobs while not regularly working. And the regular staff are quite diverse and seem satisfied. The homeless are generally good but a few can cause problems.

Pros

Free food

Cons

Kinda nasty sometimes

Empty promises

no benefits under contract, no hope in advancing no matter how much blood, sweat and tears you put in. Management needs a remodeling. The clientele (homeless) were less stressful than the management.

Pros

Cons

Toxic environment, overworked staff

Not a healthy organization to work for and definitely do not stand behind their Christian logo. They do not care about clients or staff and only care about money and politics. Management ignore issues and change policy accordingly and cover up for middle management who could not keep staff due to abuse of power, favoritism and inappropriate affairs with female shelter staff.

Cons

Everything

Most of the time it was workable but thge major problem was the lack of ontgrity of the management and employees.

You have to do your job ignoring the top management or they will tear you apart, lack of honesty and integrity is very evident. Hours are good and so is the benefits
