Fun workplace
Great place to work. The training can be really stressful and overwhelming but there is always someone around to guide you. Kids are awesome and the staff make the job so worthwhile as well.

Only good as a temporary career
Not a good long term career: they pay awful, they do not appreciate their staff (I was at kanata for 2 years and got treated like bottom of the barrel) , they pay new staff as much as long time staff. It is so cliquey there! Management clearly pick favourites and it is so hard to get any kind of raise or promotion unless you are one of the favourites. The staff members gossip amongst each other and quite frankly they do poor therapy so I just feel bad the parents are paying so much just to pay for people to gossip instead of do their job. The benefits: the kids! That’s the only reason to there. You can get a good reference for a resume or a masters application, and it does look good on a resume. As long as you keep your head down, just focus on the kids and ignore all of the cliques it can be a good job. For me I got to work, did my job and went home/ I had no interest in making friends with anyone because they were all toxic and just wanted to gossip. Also you only get a half hour lunch… like talk about burnout!! Seriously they have no comprehension of why so many people quit all the time. We do not get 15 minute breaks and I constantly was burntout, I hated going to work, and I was just overall depressed when I worked there. So happy I’m out my life is way better now. Hopefully management at kanata sees this so that they can change things… it could be good but the staff and environment is so toxic!!!!

As okay as a job can be but with some intensity from time to time.
Turnover at Portia is enormous. Most employees are very young and in a transitional period but also working with kids can really drain you mentally and physically. Management is very accomodating. Job advancement is slow and not that rewarding. The energy at the centre is good everybody loves and wants the best for the kiddos but people are also very exhausted ahah.

Toxic environment, empty promises, unethical practices
I started my ABA career at Portia and was promised so much by management. I quickly learned that what they say and do are two very different things. Management creates a toxic and competitive environment where they incentivize "telling on" your peers have people of the same or similar level rate/grade each other. It is the most demoralizing culture I have ever been a part of. Reviews are supposed to be every three months, and if you meet the criteria you are automatically prompted. However, reviews are very frequently missed and many people "happen" to score one point away from promotion or pay raise. In reality, people are promoted when they are liked by management and often it wasn't following a rewview. Poria offers no paid sick days and despite what the employment contract says, it talks the administration months extra to set up your benefits. In addition, there are frequent mistakes in paychecks ( ex. pays 4 hours instead of 7 for stat holidays) Unlike other ABA centres, the STs keep their doors shut and rarely assist with problem behaviours. They rarely do in-person supervision where they can actually suggest/assist. Instead, they stay in their offices and have someone videotape the kids. I stayed at Portia because I loved the kids, however, their practices put their kids at such a disadvantage. The staff are massively overworked. There is no care put to mental health. Additionally, if there are not enough staff working they will just put two kids with one therapist. They will frequently put brand new staff in therapy alone (despite promising complete training).Management preaches that staff needs to be able to handle constructive criticism ( of which they give A LOT) however, they can't seem to be able to take any themselves. I have since moved on to a different ABA centre and it has honestly just made me realize Portia was worse than I even thought. Please reconsider before taking a job there.
