The North West Company selected this as a representative reviewWorking for the northwest company was challenging. Dealing with logistics of ordering and going to the airport to pick up your own freight. Learning diverse cultures . Overall hard challenging work but a great experience overall.

Category assistant (Current Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 16 September 2023
They are currently working with a consultant company to make it better. Unfortunately, this makes our workload greater than our working hours but I have a very supportive boss and we work on priorities.

Great place to work and build new friendships and to experience remote lifestyle of the Canadian north.
Grocery Manager (Former Employee) - La Loche, SK - 21 August 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Working with First Nations peoples in the Canadian north and experiencing the their culture . What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Working until all day and later coming back to unload winter road freight until 2 or 3 in the morning. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Work environment can be what you want to make it . A little hard work goes along way building confidence with you and your customers and team effort with fellow employees at the same time . What is a typical day like for you at the company? Early to rise , going thorough your regular routine checking the condition of your store and inventory. Engaging with the store team as to the best way and new ways to satisfy our customer’s needs. Finishing off the day with a good home cooked meal and socializing with staff after work.

The working environment is pretty good. Your hard work will get recognized by the management. Slightly older management style and slower response to new technology.

A Nightmare of Incompetence and Disastrous Management
Category Management (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 4 July 2023
I recently had the unfortunate experience of being associated with NWC, and I cannot stress enough how utterly disappointing and frustrating my encounter with this organization was. The lack of concern for people and the abysmal management practices were enough to make me question the company's ethical standards. From the moment I joined NWC, it was clear that the management was more interested in their own agendas rather than the well-being of their employees. There was an overwhelming sense of disregard for the concerns and needs of the workforce. Employee morale was low, and it's no wonder why—there was no effort made to create a positive and supportive work environment. Communication at NWC was nothing short of a disaster. Important information was either withheld or delivered haphazardly, leaving employees in a perpetual state of confusion. Requests for clarification or assistance were often met with indifference or brushed aside entirely. It was as if the management team took pride in their inability to effectively communicate with their staff. Incompetence seemed to be the defining trait of the management team at NWC. Decisions were made without proper consideration of the consequences, resulting in significant setbacks for the company and unnecessary stress for employees. It became clear that the management lacked the necessary skills and experience to lead effectively. The overall organization of the company was a complete mess. The management's complete disregard for work-life balance was appalling. Employees were expected to work long hours with no recognition or -

No standards.
Sales Associate (Former Employee) - Cambridge Bay, NU - 4 July 2023
Expect to make people sick. Expect people to make mistakes, but expect to be yelled at for making the smallest mistake. Expect people from town telling you that you work for and evil company. Expect covering your entire yearly salary 8 times in a week. Expect to be fully taken advantage of by your managers. The people you work for do not want to work. If they see you are a hard worker they will squeeze you dry until theres absolutely nothing left of you.
Pros
They pay your food.
Cons
If your salaried expect to work 50 hours

Great place
Grocery Manager (Former Employee) - Canada - 16 June 2023
Fellow employees were easy to get along with. Benefits are decent and if you work as a department or store manager for the Northern Store, housing and food are paid for by the company.
Pros
Great people, housing and food covered in Northern Retail Stores
Cons
No transparency, poor communication from upper management.

Not great, but not terrible
Supervisor (Former Employee) - Quebec Province - 22 May 2023
My first few years with this company were a tremendous learning experience. That being said things have gone a bit downhill. Be aware that you will be far from friends and family and expected to work long hours. Management team varies, some are great some are challenging depending on the location. I do not regret working here, but I'd never do it again.

Not a good place to work for.
Stocker (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 5 May 2023
They don't care about you as their employee who's been there for 3 years. Managers always push you around. You're just a number to them. Grocery manager will constantly complain about you for a few days if you're trying to book time off. He will purposely schedule you in on the day you booked off like a month in advance. They want you to do extra work even though you're doing more than enough for them. Raise is around 10 cents a year. Employees do all this gossip so don't try to tell your coworkers something personal because everyone will be talking about you for days.
Pros
Nothing.
Cons
Everything.

This company sucks!!!!
Financial Service Administration Manager (Current Employee) - Northern Canada - 19 March 2023
No upper management support. Work life balance is near ZERO. Isolation and up to 75+ hours a week on base salary with NO overtime. Terrible living conditions. They sucker you in with all kinds of promises and dump you off the minute you get there. NOT worth it!!!

Okay to work here
Warehouse Worker (Former Employee) - Winnipeg, MB - 9 March 2023
If you’re okay with really repetitive tasks and easy going managers then this place is pretty nice. If you’re a FT term position then you’re probably not gonna get any benefits and sometimes they’ll keep you for a year and you still won’t receive benefits cause you’re technically still a term position.
Pros
Getting off early
Cons
No benefits
