Collaborative and team work orientated environment
System Design Engineer (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB21 January 2020
The company provides an excellent work environment to improve employees' productivity and promotes a work-life balance. Growth and development opportunity exist within the company and employees are encouraged to develop their own plan for their growth. Collaborative and team work is encouraged. Compensation and rewards are based on individual, business unit and company's performance.

Horrible Leadership. Company could be so much better
Business Analyst (Current Employee) –  Calgary, AB10 December 2019
Pros:
- market pay and good bonuses (benefits below average and being reduced)
- Personal days off
- Work-life balance
- Depending on the group; decent people

Areas of improvement
- Lack of focus and direction
- Hard to make a difference when leadership doesn’t know what they want
- Very hierarchical/manage up
- Constant organizational change at all levels/little stability
- Rampant toxic, gossipy, nepotism, managing up, fear of retaliation culture especially in corporate services

TC Energy does not hire or promote the best. They pass up good performers to hire their friends from the outside or internal suck ups who agree with the boss says. The existing people are made to think that they suck and we’re doing everything wrong while new hires are superstars. There is a lack of direction One day they are a dinosaur and the next a startup.

I would suggest a management overhaul but based on their recent track record, the new leaders are worse than the old ones. Treat everyone with respect. Just because you’re a leader doesn’t make you smarter than everyone else. Allow us to do our job. Appreciate the contribution people are making not only those of your favourites.

Stay away from here unless you are in the friends and family category. If it was not for revenue from tolls, this company would not survive.

Record profits and a stable company but continuous layoffs since 2015 and a disregard for people make this a place to avoid.
Director (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB23 August 2019
Wages and benefits are top notch but there has been a lack of respect for employees since 2015 and layoffs continue despite record profits. A soul sucking, negative environment.
Pros
Good wages, benefits
Cons
Disregard for people, no strategy, unsupportive environment, stress inducing and not enjoyable.

Declining Corporate Culture
Business Analyst (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB7 April 2019
I started in 2006 when the company was under different leadership. It was great. You were encouraged to take courses that helped advance your career. Then Hal left.
The new upper management is just about $$ and not the people. They move managers around so much, they don't get to know their teams or jobs before they are moved again. Bad management = less productive teams & individual employees.

Stay away if you enjoy an inclusive workplace where you feel valued and rewarded
Communications Specialist (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB21 February 2019
I worked here for 5 years in a variety of roles and at first it was a very fun and I enjoyed coming to work. However in the past few years there have been major changes and the remaining leadership is the terrible and incompetent, from the top down. The culture is very toxic and stressful, and unfortunately poor behaviour is encouraged and even rewarded. Stay away if you enjoy an inclusive workplace where you feel valued and rewarded. Apart from the pay and great benefits, there is not much good left in this company (sadly).
Pros
Good pay, generous benefits and time off
Cons
Poor leadership, lack of direction, lots of harassment

Excellent company and work-culture. Employees are generally quite satisfied with their work-life balance, how they contribute to the success of the organization, pay and benefits.
Pros
Great reputation
Cons
Experiencing a period of 'management change out', currently. This can cause exhaustion at times.

Good Company
Quality Specialist (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB28 October 2018
I worked with great people at TC but the quality of the leadership is uneven. There are good competent managers but there are also many the shouldn't be there. The silo mentality has prevented the company from making the needed changes that the leadership has been trying to spearhead. Depending of your position, this can be very frustrating.

If you are in the right group, you may find the environment to be pleasant and positive. It is still a good company to work for and they generally treat you very well.
Pros
Good Salaries and benefits
Cons
Silo mentality

A great company if you're not up and coming
Engineer (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB2 August 2018
The work environment at TransCanada has become overly negative and critical from the top down. Management has made a good place to work the last couple years not so great.

Repeated, constant criticism and cynicism directed towards younger staff has made it difficult to grow here. It's unfortunate that this is the experience of a young engineer as the company as a whole is a great one. The Salary/Benefits are unbelievable, but I wouldn't want to work here as a younger employee. It's a great place if you already have experience.

Many employees who move departments, are forced out, or otherwise quit are simply being replaced by contractors

Great place to work
Engineer (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB15 March 2018
Spent many years working as an engineer in various positions. Great work / life balance, challenging, and in general a positive working culture. The company has changed since the business restructuring awhile back and it isn't as fun a place to work as it used to be, hopefully they can turn it around. It is a fairly dynamic work place that seems to move people around somewhat often unfortunately.
Pros
Good salary and benefits, lots of time off, reasonable work pace
Cons
Management and politics tends to get interesting too often. Lots of dead weight hanging around.

Generally good while it lasts...
Manager (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB20 February 2018
Not unlike many of the companies in Calgary, there have been and continue to be job cuts. Even employees with superior performance ratings, like myself and several others, will likely eventually find themselves on the wrong project or in the wrong area of the company that gets cut. This also affects performance of current employees who are often on edge, concerned about the longevity of their current positions.

TransCanada hires the best overall people and generally treats them pretty well. Most of the company is committed to work-life balance and diversity initiatives. The pay is probably towards the higher end for most employers. the company has good benefits, pension plan, ergonomic assessments, etc.

As most managers hire for fit, there are little to no employee relationship problems or organizational "terrorists". The culture is very team-based and collaborative, and strong performance is often recognized.
Pros
pay, work-life balance, generally good co-workers
Cons
job insecurity

Management promotes less qualified people who they hang out with after work hours
Engineer (Current Employee) –  Calgary, AB22 January 2018
Pay is ok. But management is the typical good old boys club. They don't give credit to people's seniority and experiences. It seems some managers like promoting those people they hang out with after work hours. They believe in gossips as some employees will talk down other employees just to get a promotion.

One manager let a friend's daughter go on a leave to travel during the lay offs. He laid-off a few good employees, then re-instate the leave of absence employee back after her leave of absence, and promoted this employee over other long-tenured and experienced employees.
Pros
Ok benefits
Cons
Unfair management
