Low pay
They are looking for highly qualified people (at least a bachelors degree and either working on or completed education degree) and paying just above minimum wage. It is good if you need experience teaching/working with children but otherwise not worth it for the low compensation.

Lovely Kids, Terrible owner
Extremely underpaid position with every excuse under the sun not to increase pay. Though the kids are lovely, turnover due to low wages and hours is factored into the job, do not expect to stay here longer than 8 months. It churns employees like it churns clients. Also, you never can talk to parents about their children, everything has to be filtered through management because though they supposedly hire qualified educators, they don't trust them enough not to shoot the business in the foot. Other staff tended to be fun and easy to work with but it is hit and miss and they will never be around long enough to form an effective team.

Nice part time job
Working at Sylvan, I don’t need to worry about no students, no class hours. In contrast, there are a lot of students choosing Sylvan which shows that Sylvan is a trustable institution.

Golden standard façade for poor quality ideals
The other tutors were normally all good people and my manger when I left was good, but the management before hand and the higher ups in the company were truly awful. The longer I stayed with the company the more apparent it was that student success was secondary. There were times getting orders for erasers and pencils was difficult, when tutors were given several difficult students at a time with no support. Minimal training, confusing seating arrangements and favoring certain staff for work even if they did not have the knowledge set (biology, chemistry or English) was a common occurrence. If you plan on working there once and a while for extra cash, that is fine, however it is worth warning I worked there for five years and never once was given a raise or any recognition for my loyalty to my students or the company. Even if you get hired, there is no guarantee that person will be offered any hours. Honestly, for barely over minimum wage it is not worth the time. If you have a passion for tutoring as I do, this is not the place to go.

Pushy and Unethical
They do not understand the phrase no when asked to work outside of your schedule. Have been harassed constantly over scheduling. They don't pay what your worth, had to fight them on paying for my gas mileage when I filled in for a centre out of town. They refuse to tell parents when the program isn't working for their children. There is no one to call or email if you are experiencing problems with management. Will schedule students without having the staff to cover those hours and then guilt you over not being able to work during that time. No flexibility outside of their set tutoring program to accommodate students with specific needs.
