Solid employment for those who want to progress only so far.
Heavy Equipment Operator/Supervisor (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 9 May 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedSpent over a decade with this company. The vast majority of the people are great. Gained valuable experience over the years, but unless you're a local or friends with high management, you're permitted to advance only so high. To put it in other words, if you're happy with progressing only so far, this is a fantastic place to work. Apply if you're content with operating equipment for thirty years. The work-life balance is first-rate. There is the stability of employment aspect. Plenty of knowledge to take in through the years. For the work, the income is above average. As an operator, the union setting is that of a typical nature. If or when you advance, you will be in the role of supervision, which is a more "disposable" function. It's possible that you'll be allowed to stay. It's possible that you won't be allowed to. Some have been punished in order to serve as a warning to others or to cover up for managerial faults. The politics are thick and quite disappointing.
Pros
Good Income; Stability; Experience; Benefits
Cons
Advancement is Limited to a Select Group

Great wages, horrible shift work 3days, 3nights,
Heavy Equipment Technician (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 11 January 2020
Great wages, the 3days,3nights shift work is the worst thing about the job. Your body is always in a sense of transition between days and night. Always starting your 6 days off coming off of nights. Very hard on your body and not good for your health.

Good for the Money
Heavy Equipment Operator (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 8 February 2019
Suncor is a decent place to work as a Heavy Equipment Operator. The shift is 6 days on, 6 days off, and you still start with just over 3 weeks paid vacation. They have lots of rules and protocols, but that increases the safety.
No one pushes you to work fast or harder since that could cause an accident.
Pros
Pay
Cons
Northern Alberta Canada

Heavy Equipment Operator (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 15 October 2017
Suncor has a very thorough training program and safety is the number one priority. The schedule is 3 days 3 nights and 6 off. I learned a lot but the schedule was not desirable for me as we were always coming off of night shift.

Great company to work for
Heavy Equipment Operator/Trainer (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 11 December 2016
Suncor treat their employees well, benefits are second to none but living in Fort Mac, most people don't like. We lived in Timberlea and it work a good area to live in, wee didn't frequent bars either so never ran into the trouble you always hear about.

Great group of co-workers with same goals in mind.
Tailings Equipment Operator (Former Employee) - Fort McMurray, AB - 10 May 2016
A great group of guys on my shift that could be always counted on for advice and assistance making it an environment that we could gain experience and knowledge together and grow as a team. The shifts of 6 days on and 6 days off with options of paying or trading days with trusted sufficiently experienced operators on other shifts in order to manipulate off time for very flexible home and family life was excellent. This makes up for being away from home as a commuter or the almost 15 hours per day that was required to get to site, work the 12 hour shift, and return to home or rental accommodations. Unfortunately management doesn't seem to have the operators best interests as the best operators and employees are only treated as good as the less competent being punished and restricted as group when one employee is solely responsible for an incident. I know as management a certain prerogative is to be achieved but employees should be treated on a more personal level. I don't think anyone should be treated special but for management not being able to single out employees that have been hired with absolutely no experience and might not have the skills it will take for the position and to keep them on is creating an unsafe weak link that could ultimately result in an incident that will affect another employees family and wellbeing for the rest of their lives.
Pros
Work schedule, great group of co-workers, pretty much family
Cons
Managment style
