Great Expectations; Poor Management

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Staff turnover is very high (40+ Staff in 3 months at the Port Coquitlam location alone). The company is very poor at training its staff. Head office is a mess. If you understand the actual value of your work, you will be phased out through harassment. Typical family business: if you aren't family, you are going to be ground into the dust. Advice: Do your duty to the LETTER of what they ask you. Offer nothing more.

Pros

Higher than average starting wage.

Cons

Poor Training; Poor Management; Great Expectations for little to NO reward.

Unprofessional Management, No Career Advancement, Favoritism

Unprofessional managers and disrespectful owners , they would give you no training but will expect you to do great. Very unorganized inventory management, warehouse is screwed up as you won't find the products where they should be. No matter how hard you work, you are always get a negative feedback.High turnover, have seen more than 20 employees just walking out on their job.Worst place one can work for. Not the right company to grow in. Just a matter of time , once they found a cheap replacement for you, you are gunna let go. No paid break , only one 30 min lunch throughout the whole shift. So if you have a better opportunity while you are working there, just don't give it a second thought. In a nutshell, worst workplace with highly inexperienced as well as unprofessional management making the workplace unbearable. Night Manager.

Pros

Decent Starting Pay Fixed Schedule

Cons

Bad work environment Unnecessary Stress Worst Management No Growth Negativity No paid breaks

Good coworkers & great leadership owner in supportive environment

Summit Tools is a place for you if you are self-driven and good team player. The atmosphere at the office is really supportive. If you have any questions, your coworkers are always willing to share their knowledge without hesitated. The best thing working at Summit Tools is that you will feel you are like part of the family, the owner is open-minded and truly care about their employees. There are many staff who have been working for a long period of time from 5 years or even more than that. It could be challenging from time to time, but if you are looking for a company have a nice workplace culture. Summit Tools could be the right choice for you.

Pros

supportive coworkers, nice working environment & workplace culture

Cons

sometimes could be challenging

Fine for short term employment

Starting there was fine, but within a few months it was clear that management had no clue how to motivate employees or assign tasks. Tons of scapegoating low to mid-level employees to cover up management incompetence, and 0 HR support. Far more stress and workplace politics than it's worth. Also, not a great COVID-19 response within the store OR the Head Office.

Pros

Some coworkers are nice

Cons

Unfit management, poor COVID-19 response, uncomfortable office environment + dynamics

Management and company culture are jokes

There is no company culture whatsoever, they expect you can achieve a lots of things with very little training or even none. You probably will ended up doing different position stuff when you applying for the job. Many people come and go just check previous reviews they are all facts. If you are new grads from school, this maybe indeed is a nice place to start your experience. However, if you are looking to learn something new or upgrading your skillset, don’t waste your time in this unorganized terrible management company. They don’t even know what they are doing most of the time. Your opinion won’t be appreciated as you should just keep the head down and be quiet. What a joke!

Pros

none

Cons

overloaded stress

Bad Management.

They expect you to do jobs that are not in the job description. Management is unorganized some lazy. No structure within the company. Family owned company that does not care about the employees. Low in moral team. Owner will just walk pass by you without saying a word. Management hiring when I was there as not diverse. Saw about 5 people come and go from the time I started until I left, not including upper management. Try to avoid applying or working in this company as you won’t grow in all aspects.

Pros

Flexible Schedule

Cons

Bad management. Low pay.

Took some time to write this to ensure that I wasn't being biased

I worked as the Manager for the Central Dist. Center for nearly a year until Covid hit. At which point, amidst their downsizing "due to company restructuring" received an email and only an email stating that my position had been removed. When I had called to inquire and receive any constructive criticism pertaining to my time there, I was met with answering machines and "out of office" voicemails. Not even a character reference after being told, numerous times, by the current Regional Distribution Manager at the time, that they'd be calling me within a few weeks to report back to work. To begin, I'll highlight a few positives of the role and the company:- Good work/life balance w/ minimal overtime and weekend off- Average Salary for a management role of this caliber.- They'll reimburse your expenses for buying coffee and donuts for your team.- Average benefit package- Company discount on tools. Now, the company is family owned and run with a hierarchy that prevents any real collaborative decision making unless it goes through the owner first. As someone who is very progressive and open to offer new ideas, this had become extremely demoralizing over the months, as more and more concerns in their operations had revealed themselves and provided the company with reason for new implementations, which was never acknowledged or acted upon when the issues were raised..- Their SOP's for inventory coordination are non-existent. They have an annual inventory count and that's it.- I was instructed to advise my team that only some in-bound shipments required break down and counting. -

Avoid Working Here At All Cost

Worst Company Ever, Regional Manager/Warehouse Manager consistently nags at the employees whenever a simple mistake was made. You are expected to do more work than described in the job description for cheap pay. Employee never got a raise promised to them after years of working there, Warehouse looks like a horror scene, as leaks all over and its flooded every time it rains. They will hire you for Tax purposes and fire you after a month or so with no cause. They make you shovel snow for hours when it snows. Just a ridiculous & Cheap company overall with Terrible Management.

Good people good atmosphere

Was a little intimidated with the amount of tools this place has to offer at first. I am fairly confident in using them however ensuring the customer received what they truly needed was a little intimidating to me. Management and staff put me at ease instantly as well were ready to assist me in every step with my learning curve. I will definatly miss this place.

Pros

Good atmosphere

Cons

None to think of

Room to grow

Summit Tools is a good company to work for, as there is quick advancement and room to grow if you work hard and prove yourself. Most staff do not get two days off in a row which is a downside of the job, but you hardly ever work past 6 pm unless it is during inventory. The staff are friendly and fun to work with.

Not a Great Envirmoment

They were quick to respond to the initial application, I had a phone interview and scheduled for an interview within a week. The interview was archaic questions like 'tell me a time when you disagreed with your boss', and many similar questions, basically no right answer type questions. The interviewer was interrupted several times during the interview, kept apologizing but really disrupted the flow of the interview. The interviewer, who was the store manager explained the typical work day, every employee was required to work every Saturday, every one gets Monday off and one other day. You work 8.5 hours per day, half hour unpaid lunch (which is fine), but they do not allow coffee breaks, you are permitted the 1 half hour break in an 8.5 hour day. you get 2 weeks vacation, but June and July are blacked out, as is December, and several other "sales weeks" throughout the year, basically any long weekend. If you do need a Saturday off, I was advised you need to request it at least 5 weeks in advance, even then there is good chance it won't be approved. needless to say I declined the offer

Hard work + accountability can get you far....

Yes, you have to work hard and put in the hours. Yes, you are held accountable for your duties. Yes, you could be *gasp* critiqued. BUT, this family owned and operated company has an amazing heart, and they truly care for those employees who take pride in the work they do. There are many long-term employees throughout all departments, and they are treated as family. They pay above average and are willing to promote within the company. Its mostly a friendly, professional, fast-paced atmosphere.
