Only good thing is work culture.
Assistant Vice President (Former Employee) –  Singapore21 August 2019
No matter how hard you work a Japanese expat will always be your boss. If you want to climb high the corporate ladder this is not the place for you. If you do not mind having a secure job this is the place for you to work and stay low.

Detail oriented not so fun
Dealer/Manager Assistant (Former Employee) –  Guangzhou7 August 2019
everything is about detail, how to greeting, doing jobs, sending emails, even with filling documents and stickers on the documents. They have rules for all the things you need to do. Not much space for you to develop.

Little advancement for locals
VP (Former Employee) –  New York, NY7 August 2019
This is a Japanese bank which replenishes Japanese expat management staff with other expats every few years, leaving little room for local hires to progress. NEPOTISTIC culture is further promoted in the instances where there are local bosses by having parallel expat co-heads that are in charge of expat staff. Do not plan on career advancement here.
Pros
Good benefits
Cons
Excessive and duplicative expat staffing

Okay if you are not pursuing big raises or fast promotions
Bank Analyst (Former Employee) –  New York, NY18 June 2019
The bank gives you good benefit. Nice work environment, good culture, but do not expect big raise and fast promotions. If you are lucky you might get them but usually you get same kind of raise every year and very slow promotions no matter how hard you work.

Regulatory Reporting Analyst (Consultant) (Former Employee) –  Jersey City, NJ16 May 2019
The culture in this company is very Japanese style. Everyone needs to follow the instructions step by step. The decision making is in stages along with the corporate hierarchy.Their decisions are very cautious and conservative and sometimes slower than U.S. companies.

Not a good fit
Vice President (Former Employee) –  New York, NY15 May 2019
Highly micromanaged to the point where my boss would answer my phone. The stress level was unnecessarily high and one simple mistake would warrant a 'meeting' with my boss. Perhaps my experience is the exception, but it was not a good fit for me.

Manager (Former Employee) –  Kuala Lumpur26 April 2019
Your experience in SMBC depends on your direct boss.
I had a great boss, so top work life balance, great bonus and overall a great place to work in.
Left because progression was slow, promotions tend to be based on seniority instead of performance.
Would re-join in a heart beat.
Pros
Lots of overseas business trips
Cons
Promotion based on seniority not performance

Japanese Bank - Bank with a culture
Assistant Manager - Compliance (Former Employee) –  Dubai17 April 2019
Here you have to follow culture, something which you cannot change. It is very important you follow the procedure and policy to the theory and sometimes misses the practical approach, which in way is help, but makes you risk averse.
Pros
Protected, stability
Cons
Ability to change reduces, Culture is different

US managers afraid of Tokyo management, near complete disconnect
Associate (Current Employee) –  New York, NY10 February 2019
The culture is strange. Little of the good of Japanese culture. Lots of bad. Managers won't make decisions just in case Tokyo MIGHT disapprove. Tokyo managers won't take initiative. Hundreds of employees are being forced to move from Manhattan HQ to White Plains - or get fired. That's mainly because a number of senior managers live near White Plains and will greatly reduce their commute.

The firm has NO common sense. Employees who do tend to get fired. The firm says they are proud of not laying people off, yet employees often leave in large groups with no explanation.

There is little to no cooperation between offices, regions or HQ. Lots of rules, but almost no actual controls. No one knows where the money goes, or why. There are pockets of dedicated employees, and even bigger pockets of employees hiding out from work. Managers only cooperate with other managers they get along with.
Pros
decent benefits at much lower cost than usual, The annual holiday part - which you pay for, is nice.
Cons
Poor management, being forced to move to NJ or White Plains, poor pay

Good company if you value stability above all else
VICE PRESIDENT / AGILE COACH (Former Employee) –  New York, NY10 February 2019
SMBC is a great company if you want to never be concerned about being laid off. The company largely has a no layoff policy and tends to retain all employees regardless of job performance. The benefits are really good and raises are given each year. For anyone who is seeking a real chance at lifetime employment, this company comes very close to it.

That being said, the culture is very slow moving and hierarchical; administration is favored over removing obstacles to decision-making; if you're seeking an entrepreneurial environment in which you're encouraged to make fast decisions, this isn't the right place for you. Also, if you have any dreams of being promoted quickly, this also isn't the right place.
Pros
Stability, Work Life Balance, Benefits
Cons
Very hierarchical culture; decisions are slow, meetings are numerous, very bureaucratic and administrative; little to no advance potential

If you are seeking a job that can better keep balance of your work and life, SMBC is a good choice. They have 10-15 paid vacation depends your year of working. Twice bonus a year with total three to four times of your monthly salary.
