Stemcell has a fantastic culture on paper but does not always live up to it in practice. The company has grown very quickly with many employees being there from it's infancy. This has caused many inexperienced people to be in management positions who aren't always the best choice.
It can be easy to coast in the company as they will try and support you any way they can but this will leave the good workers to pick up that slack, without the credit or pay for it.
Pros
Great culture and fantastic owner
Cons
High expectations for often low pay

Excellent company to work for. The team spirit, management and all employees are amazing. Definitely a place I would recommend working. The owner of the company has an amazing vision and it's great to be part of a company that has such a great vision and potential.

Yet again found it's way onto the list of BC's best managed companies, and rightly so. Worked here for 4+ years and looking forward to the future. Great work culture and great management which one would come to appreciate after 1 or two experiences with a bad manager.. They genuinely focus on employee progression for those that show genuine interest.

Worked in manufacturing in the clean room for a year and a half. My manager was awful. Condescending and rude, lied about overtime pay, had no experience in the clean room so was completely useless on top of the fact she didn't take suggestions from the employees actually performing manufacturing duties, and in general a real buzz kill. Easily the worst manager I've ever had.

It was a great place to work. The management on my team was good, but I can't say that for all other groups in the organization. The company events and activities were interesting and lots of fun.

- This company provides terrible 'opportunities' that limit career advancement if an employee ever tries to leave.
- Management is absent, or when actually contributing, makes uninformed decisions that disrupt employee advancing with approved projects.
- Women are not treated appropriately. Management asked each woman in an all-women meeting if each planned to get married and start a family. Would men be asked the same?

- Management doesn't conduct proper research prior to making decisions, and changes their minds often which looks disorganized and unprofessional.

- Employees are unhappy and complain constantly.

- There are almost 50 HR staff working in the company. Why so many if they never address employee concerns? What are they doing?

- The company is moving to Production Way near SFU. Almost all employees will need to commute much further (+45 minutes each way) to get to work. They don't tell this to job candidates.

- The company actively removes negative posts from Glassdoor, etc. to make their ratings look better. That isn't ethical and misleads potential job candidates.
Pros
Transit is close by.
Cons
Office is located in a dangerous neighbour, Someone was recently shot and killed in the warehouse next door.

Typical Day at Work:
Flexible hours working with an awesome team.

As the company is in a period of growth, there is always something new to do and learn.

Management:
Management are good with people and encourage open and honest communication. They are authentic and act with integrity.

Workplace Culture:

It's a relaxed workplace culture, which focuses on the important aspects of the job such as high quality performance and interdepartmental collaboration and less so about standards of dress.

Amazing Christmas Holiday Party which celebrates the achievements of the whole company over the past year.

Loads of great clubs and societies to join such as STEMSail, STEMRun, STEMJazz, STEMRock, Dragon Boats, Volley Ball, Book Club and many more.

Hardest part of the job:

It's a busy work place.

Best part of the job:

The people.
Pros
Free coffee/tea, good work-life balance, the people, Company Mission, Company Culture
Cons
Can't think of any

I was very excited to be hired at Stemcell following my undergrad. It's supposedly a hard company to get into.
Was told many times about the opportunities for advancement after one year at the company, as well as the numerous internal courses offered to employees. I believed that this would allow me to explore different areas of the company. However, there are a small number of internal courses, and many are reserved solely for employees who require the course.

Management style is quite old-school. Change happens very slowly, as typical in such a corporate top-down structure.
Co-workers are great, but the company does not seem to value its employees as much as they make it seem.
Pros
Lavish christmas party and department summer event, Free tea and coffee, Great benefits (health benefits and RRSP matching)
Cons
Old-school corporate structure, lots of moving around (positions and physical locations), high turn-over rate of employees, less opportunities for growth as are said.

Very upbeat office environment and everyone shared a hard working mentality. Learned how to prioritize revenue generating tasks and the necessary steps to complete the sales cycle. Lots of attention and support was provided by management. Learning and improvement was highly encouraged. The hardest part of the job was prospecting. The most enjoyable part of the job was closing a deal.
