Decent Workplace, No Growth

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
It is a good place to get some customer service experience but hours are inconsistent and there aren’t any opportunities for growth. Newer management defers as much as possible and avoids customer complaints/escalations. No real reward for high sales performances.

Great Benefits, Low Pay

Above average benefits for full-time employees, but low wages, small yearly raises (1-3%) and little to no development opportunities. Decent part-time job for students

Solid for retail

Management was supportive and not bad to work for. Everyone at the Masonville location was generally cheery and friendly and excited to represent the Staples brand in uniform. It doesn't feel like they try to take advantage of you. The job itself is quite fast paced at peak times and requires you to prioritize tasks effectively to make sure that both in person and online orders are completed by deadline, as well as working the shipping counter on top on an as-needed basis. During the Christmas season, you might only work shipping for a whole shift with a non-stop lineup of people shipping gifts. So that's why there's only a 4 star, I didn't get a raise in two years and there isn't much room for advancement unless you are ready to dedicate your life to the company and want to be a "retail lifer". If you're fine towing the line and not going anywhere, or working very hard to prove yourself for only a slight chance at promotion, this is a great place to work. I never felt like I dreaded going to work, just got bored with the monotonous routine.

Okay

Good place to work except that they stopped giving us commissions for the items we sell which isn’t good. There is prospect for promotion if you put in the work. Good managers too.

Its a good starter job

Some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life in which I work with. I do agree with other reviews that employees are often pressured to do more and more for the same rate of pay. The rewards that follow that extra work tend to be next to zero as well, which is unfortunate.

Terrible

Not a good place to work. Managers have no respect for employees. In need of full time employees but won’t pay them accordingly. No long term employees

Just don’t.

I know everywhere is different, but at least where I am and surrounding areas it’s an extremely poor job. Minimum wage to get barked at by customers which sure is sometimes reasonable working customer service. But the managers need to be trained, especially considering majority of them have been working there since the early 2000’s. They treat their employees very poorly, obviously with a smile on their face. Expect above and beyond from you when you’re already tasked with a complex job being paid barley enough to get by. Then “HR” wants your hours cut so your managers schedule you 3 hour shifts at odd times of the day, which in my opinion what’s the point to go make 30$ to have half of it taken away by taxes. And don’t get me started with their “benefit” program. You don’t even get asked if you want to be part of it, they just automatically deduct portions of your pay. As a part time employee paying almost 30$ every pay to “LTD” i’m never going to get is absolutely absurd, especially when i’ve asked my manager about it and if i can opt out with no avail. Overall a very terrible company, all they want is your money, they force sales on customers, treat their employees like garbage but expect above and beyond from your performance. Stay clear

hard work but overall was still a decent place to work

It can be a difficult job, but also if you like working hard it can be rewarding.co workers were nice , lead hand and supervisor was also good.only downside was lifting heavy items up flights of stairs, and pay could also be improved to reward your efforts.

Used to be a great company

Staples used to be 5 stars but now it's difficult. Hours are cut to the point of almost not being able to operate. Push for warranties and print sales are exhausting.

Easy and Productive

Work as a highschool co-op student. I work in the aisle and tech section talking to customers, restocking and unpackaging. Not too stressful or boring

Productive but not a place to grow, especially for minority communities.

What is the best part of working at the company?Being associated with a well recognized brand. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? In fighting within and between departments at head office level which cascades down to retail store level. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Little consideration for diversity and inclusion. Leadership teams are not reflective of diverse communities.

Average

Good company, working experience changes depending on location but managers are usually supportive. A lot of responsibility and expectations but good for part time job.

Not a fun place

High turn over, little training provided. Very little opportunity for promotion. This is just a good place for Students to work while in school. It’s just a pay check
Was this review helpful?

Fun but underpaid

Great team culture but seriously underpaid and overworked. Needs better comp structure and better lead qualifiers. Basically always work weekends as you are responsible for your own sales.

routine duties and soliciting

The overall work is pretty easy but because Staples is new in wireless and recently joind with Bell not many people come buy to but their plan and phones from staples. Also you are dependent on Bell and Virgin promotions which are not that good all the time. They require you to talk with people in different sections of the store and do planners with them

Productive and supportive place

Good place to work as a start up to careers. Manager are pretty supportive and always encourage you. Work life balance and average pay. Fast paced environment.

Was great 2 years ago but getting worse

Laid back overnights but the management is getting worse. New hires are stepping over senior employees which stunts growth opportunities for employees who deserve it.
