Ineffective management is entirely driven by hierarchical profit-driven company structure. Get experience, try not to get jaded and then get out, because it's a machine for protecting managers' jobs at the cost of your labor, job security and opportunity for advancement.

I found it a challenging place to work. The managers would take work, leaving not enough work for employees and they would be given credit for doing so. They would have 98% efficiency, leaving employees struggling around 50% having to use leave with out pay to fill timecards.

Lots of great people and challenging projects. Organization largely built on acquisitions creating many layers of management and difficulties in advancement.

It was a horrible place to work. They treated people unfairly, fired people for no reason at all - called it a reorg. Leadership had no idea what they were doing.

I don't think it's the place where you can have Job Work/Life Balance. there is a lot of stress. you will not have enough budget to do your work; therefore, they make you work overtime for free to achieve your goals.

Very stressful place to work, unrealistic deadlines, poor communication, not respected by drafting managers. Use senior designers to get project to certain point then drop them using intermediates to finish project leaving people out of work. Management bashing other designers and clients in front of staff and other designers. Ego issues with management.

Overall, a good company to work for. There are always changes, but that's what keeps it interesting. The work is varied and there is room for advancement.

There is a change in the culture on the company wherein other company cultures has invaded. It is no longer what it used to be. People do not come first anymore.

I have a great time and experience working for Stantec in the l
past 5.5 years on position Jr. piping drafter / designer. Unfortunately because shortage of work recently they sent me on lay-off together with few other designers. Stantec is great and enjoyable place for work and very well diversified in many engineering disciplines and divisions across Canada and USA.

Good company. Lots of great people. Bad times in the O& G sector made the environment toxic and leaders cared more about their own position than the good of the shareholders, company, or employees. Very sad.

So many levels of management that it is difficult to get anything resolved. The environment is toxic and people constantly throwing others under the bus. There are some great people, but a lot of staff get burnt out and frustrated easily.

A great organization for professional experience and development. With Head office in Edmonton, senior leadership is not always available but a strong supervisor and relationship with leadership within your business unit will set you up for a great career.

Difficult to balance work load and personal life. What the corporate promote is not what you seen at the local businesses centers.
No enough funds allocated to attend conferences and advance trainings
Pros
Quartely meetings, once a year breakfast
Cons
Long hours and hard to attend courses and seminars

Stantec is a large engineering house that offers great opportunities for recent grads, and is an excellent place to start a career.

As one gets experience, vertical advancement is limited, and it is not difficult to become pigeon-holed into a position that one demonstrates proficiency in. In business, this is understandable,to keep the top producers doing what they're good at...day after day...after day. You will be worked hard and the workplace stress is palpable for middle managers. It is always worth reminding yourself that "i signed up for this".

If you did not start your career as a recent grad with Stantec to learn their impressive bureaucracy, quickly identify a mentor to learn from. New hires receive limited instruction (all webinars) and for advanced tasks such as revenue recognition, write-off, earned value analysis ect.., you're on your own to learn their systems. Unfortunately there are times where it feels like the battles fought with internal administrators are far larger than the struggles experienced with difficult clients...but that's part of the territory.

Stantec is very candid about the bottom line. At the time of hiring, intermediate project managers / engineers will be warned that in the event of a downturn, layoffs will occur. This leads to an unsettling employment start, which should not be forgotten for the duration of employment. In boom times, this caution obviously becomes a bit irrelevant, but never make an assumption that based on your utilization/performace to date, you won't be considered for layoff if the backlog gets below
