Typical day included sorting merchandise, stocking shelves, managing employees and volunteers.

A caring organization which delivers food hampers to the needy and so much more.
President/Secretary/Treasurer (Current Employee) - Calgary, AB - 25 June 2015
This is a great organization to become involved it as a volunteer. The most important job is the joy you get knowing you are helping someone less fortunate.
As President you are dealing with all types of issues of your clients such as having to pay rent, utilities, bus passes, etc.
The most difficult situations are when you deliver a hamper and the children are so excited to see food. It breaks your heart and you just want to hold those children especially when parents have an addition. I have left a clients home in tears.
The most enjoyable part is just being able to help them with whatever they need, even prayer if it is what they would like or just sit and listen to them.
On a personal note, I would like to add that I have learned not to judge others as you just do not know what their story is. For me, it was the best experienced I could have learned.
Pros
Delivery of food hampers, paid utility bills, bus passes
Cons
The heartache you will get many times as they tell you their story.

Sorter/Clerk/Office Assistant (Current Employee) - Sarnia, ON - 25 March 2014
Working at the St. Vincent de Paul has been a very positive experience. I meet many different people and enjoy speaking with them. The job itself keeps me quite busy and the days go by quickly.

This is a great place to work, Too bad it didn't last long
General Labourer (Former Employee) - Windsor, ON - 15 January 2014
I loved working here, It was great to meet kind warm people of all sorts of backgrounds. The jobs and tasked preformed were labor intensive but if you know what you were doing it was a breeze
You fist start off with collecting donations that the trucks would bring in or people that would drop off donations. Then a team of people would sort threw the donations looking for quality from new to gently used clothing. What ever wasn't good enough to make the cut would then be throw into a compactor and was then bailed for donations that were sent overseas to 3rd world countries. Other clothing items (such as t-shirts with prints) were cut into rags that would be given to the salvation army to help the less fortunate bathe or do general cleaning.
Nothing went to waste here. The old electronics that were donated were inspected for mercury batteries that were removed and disposed of properly. Other electronics that were not able to be salvaged or deemed out of date were stripped of all metal compensates and were sent to the recycling bin for drop off.
Pros
The nicest people you'll ever meet. steady work. never run of things you need to accomplish
Cons
Short time working there. Was only a temp

A high paced and engaging enviroment
Women's Shelter Relief Worker (Former Employee) - Toronto, On. - 15 December 2012
It was a very high paced work enviroment. I learned a lot about the resiliance of the women in the shelter and myself. The hardest part of the job was to see a client fall between the cracks of the system and the impact it had on the quality of thier lives in spite of all thier/my efforts, heart breaking. The most enjoyable part of the job was to be able to engage with the women and celebrate life or the day through group activities like playing games, doing yoga or dancing and laughing.
Pros
a certain level of autonomy
Cons
long hours, insufficent wages.
